Putting sites where they should actually be is not a penalty.
Too many people think penalty, when they have no logic in this
    thinking.

Your site did not always exist online. So, if and when you made it to
#1 or whatever place, it displaced a site. So, what did google do
to penalize that site that you replaced? Nothing?

But then, if you believe in penalties, then you probably believe that
you can remedy them. Okay. SO what happens when the sites that
you displaced work on their sites, remove the penalty, and once again
    move you off the map.

Google does not rank sites due to negatives of the other sites.

That would be crazy thinking, but it seems many people believe that.

There are so many things changing on google search on a second by
second basis. But people only think they do updates every so often.

They don't. The people searching today are not the same type of
person searching today. Or last hour.

Look at the news to see how quickly things change.

If 20 other sites are now looked upon as being better than your
site, that's not a penalty. That's just getting beat.

Well, I guess you got it now.

You built low quality links or used some public private network and your site got tanked AKA replaced by better site, with more realistic links.

What kind of links did you build? Blog comments, forum profiles or ... ?

have you checked your backlinks? I too experienced the same issue and been talking with google with the same question of penalty. but they said there's no penalty. When I did check my backlinks, there's a huge dip of their numbers the same time the algo update happened. go check your backlinks and see whether it has a correlation with your organic traffic.

if there's none, then go look for other problem issues in your site.

              Quick question,

How old is your site? If it's new, could this be as a result of something very simple such as seasonal trends? Just some food for thought!

              Thanks

My blog is nearly two years old. I don't know why there was a huge drop in traffic just in 5 days after Google Penguin update. Will you kindly spare some time and have a look at the backlinks.

I wouldn't say its about being "beat." Personally I would say Google understands that their algorithm sucks! The remedy is to place more emphasis on authority sites to solve the problem.

How about doing SEO & stop contacting Google every time the wind blows.

Your pages are either indexed or they're not, you can check that yourself (site:domain.com) without contacting Google.

I would say that your pre-existing links were devalued resulting in a re-rating of your rankings, not a penalty, to get back up you'll need high quality links.
