Wordpress Tags

I realize a lot of people dont use tags and I didn't either but I am now, they are noindex, nofollow though... just thought they might help with seo as adding them would include more keywords on to the page.

Is it a good idea to use your keyword variations as tags in your wordpress pages or posts? Or would that be over optimization?

Example: blackheads on face, how to get rid of blackheads on face, get rid of blackheads, black head removal, blackhead removal, blackhead treatment, face blackheads, remove blackheads

Would that be overkill?

  • You can use few tags, but not too many, the tags shouldn't repeat, they should be related to your content..

However, tags are user friendly, it provides user navigation, it has very less or no SEO benefit.

    • yes agree with hanson. it's true

    • There is even no reason to use so many tags... Use your main and max TWO of your secondary keywords, nothing more. 3-4 is max for each of your articles!

No matter they are no-follow, they are useful when you create a sitemap!
  • tags can help your visitors navigate your website, but it has nothing to do with SEO

    • I might get hung for this.... but.

I'd say tags still have some SEO value if you use them correct.
If you're able to produce tags-only sitemap, you could upload this to Google Webmaster Tools. Now Google bot can choose to come by and say hello and basically you've been a good boy in class - Which maybe give you the edge rankingwise.

I have no idea if Google would penalize you if your then using dofollow, doindex on all your taglinks, but it might be a bit too aggressive seen from a Big G perspective.

      Feedback appreciated )

If the page is noindexed why would you think Google is going to be looking at the page? When they see the noindex they'll simply ignore the page & move on.

Noindex is how you get Google to ignore a page & the content on that same page.

    • the page in not noindex, just the tag pages are..
  • I use tags since it's nice for the user to find related articles to a certain keyword. And everything that is good for your User/Reader (everything that keeps him longer on your site) is good for your SEO. Even if it's indirect.
