Does it matter if I directed backlinks to www. domain. com if the url is just domain.com? if it does that would make my day!

Yes it does unless you have set up a re-direct - so why does that make you happy?

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

Yes it does matter. In fact search engines treat those two as links to different pages.
Here is a nice video about canonical element (or w/e) from google's blog I believe:

Thanks a lot fellas. I was doing a link building campaign for the www. page, which has 3000 links. For some reason a site with 19 links was beating me and it was driving me crazy! Turns out my site had changed to domain.com at some point....

    Great thanks a lot!

I think it does not matter. You can open google.com, by entering either www or no www.

For the long run prefer to choose one option or it'll confuse between many links.

A site with www and without www are treated as two different websites by Google !

So, it is not a good practice to use both of them interchangebly. You should stick to one method either way and do it consistently throughout your website or in the external links.
