Im trying to figure out what causes a backlink to show up as deleted in Majestic SEO. Obviously most people would think the link no longer exists... But double checcking I see some links appear and deleted on the same day... and I can still see the backlink showing up on the site.

So what causes a backlink that is still in place to be deleted and what exactly does it mean in majestic seo? Is the link discounted?

How about asking Majestic's support? They may have a better idea on what causes something like this. If you ask, do report back here.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

Probably, assume majesticseo keeps monitoring your backlinks on 'X' day, when bot / crawler of majesticseo visits one of your backlink, and that particular day the page or domain might be down for some unknown reason, so MSeo crawler will treats it as a "link no longer exists"., later the page / domain is up, you will see the link is existing.

In the next crawl Mseo might change to "New Link"

Do not have any source to backup my assumption.,

The majestic bot could be blocked/can't access the page at the time of trying. They give the reason below, if the reason is link removed then the link is removed or perhaps not visible to bots anymore but usually its either a 406 or 404 error that majestic gives.

An answer from a Majestic employer:

there can be several reasons why a link is showing as lost. The simplest is if the original page contained 2 or more links and 1 or more has been removed. Although the page still contains 1 or more links 1 or more have been removed so this will show on the lost links page.
If the link has change attributes (or 1 link on the page) then this will show as a lost link, there will also be a corresponding new link on the new links page. The change in attributes will be seen as the loss of the old link and the creation of a new link.
The link is a rotating advert so it not seen every time by our bots.
The site had a temporary error when our bots visited, this would disappear from the lost links page when our bots next visit.

A good way to check your lost links, is to use the Site Explorer specifically the Lost tab within this tool. The Lost tab will allow you to click and highlight up to 14 days of areas of interest, the results will also note the exact reason why links are listed as lost.

Yes @ OP, this should be the case, it usually just happens that the bot cannot access the particular link / page at the point they crawl. But since this is a technical MajesticSEO issue, you would be better off asking them directly, as it's not really an SEO question..
