When I see this within a URL on a site...

a rel=nofollow href

So, that "rel=nofollow" part, does that mean that this link is worthless because search engines won't count it or is there any value other than someone might click the link? If no value, why are people still posting blog / forum links?

My niche has nothing to do with SEO or IM.

If the forum is a high traffic forum, signature links even though with nofollow attribute have potential to draw traffic to their websites. Also they can advertise their services there with other members. Also users may treat that forum as a place to learn more by participating discussions with Gurus.

It means the link is worthless in Google's eyes but Bing & Yahoo still count it

As per my experience you get benefit from no-follow backlinks also but it should be from a reputed , related or high page rank website.

Nofollow means that PR isn't transferred over (created to stop SPAM). However, forum links can be a source of huge traffic so I'm not really bothered about the SEO value.

In fact I would recommend that you set forum links to nofollow so you don't incur any Google penalties.
