Why the sites with no backlinks but rank top?

Hello guys,
I have a question that when I check the keywords "cheap wedding dresses" and "going out dresses" in google, I found that the top rank sites with only poor backlinks of the keywords "cheap wedding dresses" and "going out dresses" links to them, why can they get the top rank in google? These two keywords are in weak competition I think.

Does it mean that backlinks is no more important to SEO now?
Any kindly guys can explain for me?

When you have a low competition on your targeted keyword, I do not think you need to Backlinks, you only need to work on ON-PAGE-SEO

We're in a new era. Only the websites that never built links and haven't been penalized rank now.

Don't forget they could have many backlinks that your backlink checker hasn't found yet. Usually it takes 3-6 months before any of the main backlink checkers find most of the links to my sites.

hxxp://www.davidsbridal.com/ is a legit site with offline stores all over the place, ranks #1 in Google SERPs for the keyword phrase cheap wedding dresses. I didn't check their links, but I'm sure they have a boat load of legit links.

I think the OP is wondering why they have the rankings without a bunch of links that specifically say "cheap wedding dresses".

        Well that's easy.

davidsbridal.com also ranks #2 in Google SERPs for the root keyword wedding dress, that's how authority works, you rank a root keyword then piggyback off that root keyword with longtail keyword phrases (ex: cheap wedding dresses).

"Wedding dresses" is also the first phrase in their title tag. Plus, as you pointed out, they have an extensive real world business. It's easy to assume they've taken out press releases that mention 'dresses on sale, etc."

I guess the OP thought Google was very literal and needed a rich diet of heavy anchor text links to rank.

I do know that Google looks at the text surrounding hyperlinks, the actual link doesn't necessarily have to be an exact anchor-text keyword. This is partly how I help rank thumbnail images in Google text SERPs (surrounding text).

            Example:
            • car insurance
            • best vehicle insurance rate

I can't believe anyone argues with davidsbridal. They are the
leading authority on such stuff. Have been for years. Everyone I know
of who has gotten married in the last 10 years...David's Bridal
Numero Uno. Why would they need links in the first place?
Google does not live by links alone. That would be insane, but
                obviously a popular belief.

Cheap, FYI, is a cheap word, discounted many times on search
                by google.

And who searches for going out dresses? How about coming out
                dresses?
