Does Google Penalize a Slow Website?

Dear Warriors,
Lately I have noticed a slight decline in the organic traffic to my blog. I have a friend who is asking me to dump BlueHost and switch to HostGator. He further added that the blog opens very slow and that the server response time should be less than half a second.
My questions are does Google penalize slow blogs/websites? Does my blog fall in slow category? They sent me a message on my Adsense inbox, asking me to work on the speed of the blog but I really have no idea what they are talking about. Every time I open my blog, the pages loads almost instantly (in less than 10 seconds)

Please have a look at the server response time and Page Load speed test results:

Thank you all for your time!
There is one more aspect I wanted to draw your attention to: The blog (which draws about 4000 page view per day) is not the primary domain

The primary domain is a service website and it hardly get 50 visitors per day. When I had started out I never thought it'd become so big (have about 750 articles and 4000 images)

The question is, shall I convert it into primary domain?
I just had a word with BlueHost customer care, they said it was possible but they were not sure if the blog will not break its layout.

What do you suggest.
PS: I have a business account with unlimited bandwidth

I will suggest you to move to a faster server. Google may not penalize but does not like slow page loading. If it sees timeout at the crawl time, it will have adverse effect in the ranking. I have a very bad experience with Godaddy. Their servers are slow, often get infected with malware and their support always refuses to be responsible. Only good thing their price is less.

You can try lunar pages. Hostgator is better than Godaddy but still in my experience Lunar Pages is far better. But they are little costlier.

I don't think "penalize" is the exact term for that. I think google prioritize faster websites so your site will just get left behind if it is slower...

Google is not a fan of sending traffic to website where the searcher bounces right back to their SERP.

If you website is too slow, the user will return fast, or not bother to click on a new link on your page because they know they will have to wait for it to load.

Cutts have also stated that website speed is in fact a ranking factor so faster websites will be prioritized by both google and the users who you might want some income from.

I have not found that to be the case. Flash heavy sites use to get crushed years ago. Well, that is not longer our case. Most of those take for ever and ever. Google seems to like them now. However, make sure your site is always up. Get a better web hosting service. Google hates web sites that are down a lot and will penalize you.

Yep. Well actually Google penalizes website with a high bounce rate. For every second slower your website is, your bounce rate can increase up to 7%. So neither your visitors nor Google like slow sites. Good luck.

If you are on a shared plan, if may be worth it if you have the income from the blog to move it to a dedicated source? That is if you think speed is the problem. Also like I think someone suggested above take a look at what plugins you have on the site and see if they may be causing the slow down.

Google want Top 3 (Top 5) websites for every search results to load quickly. The loading time should be max 3 seconds.
Google has a policy to deliver fast good quality result.
If the website takes a longer time to load (over 3 seconds), Google's algorithm tends not to rank such websites in top 3 (or Top 5).

I will suggest you to chose a new hosting provider. And it would be better if your servers are hosted in country where your target audience is. Since this will decrease the load time for your audience and google will eventually rank your website high for that country.

Ever since it is live, it never loaded under 4 seconds. I have also noticed the relation between the organic traffic and the load time

When I first opened your website on my browser (chrome) it took 33 seconds to load completely (I'm on a 20mbps line). When I opened it again on the same browser it took around 5 seconds (less time due to browser caching). I repeated this by clearing cache and using different browsers and I got nearly same results.

My conclusion is, the main culprits would be some wordpress plugins and image compression issues. I see there are lot of images on the homepage, make sure they are compressed. (You can use some plugins for image compression.) Also, W3 Total cache plugin can sometimes cause this issue when another plugin is interfering with it. So I suggest you try disabling plugins one by one and do some R&D and find out which plugin is slowing down the page.

And about Google penalizing your website, no it won't, but it would certainly give less importance (in serps) to any website that is slow. And speed is one of the most important aspect of a website.

Well now you know the benchmark for load time. Always try to have the load time below 3 seconds.

As for hosting provider, i personally use Softlayer.

My main server (for my service which is not a website) is located at Singapore. This gives me a ping time of less than 40 ms, thus best for South Asian users.

My second and third server is also from softlayer. This one hosts my websites, and is located in San Jose, US. Thus my websites have a very low load time (under 2.3 seconds) which helps me rank higher in Google.com

You can also chose hostgator. They have a new datacenter in Hyderabad.

Thanks for the interesting insight Amogh,

Well, I deliberately chose the domain .co.in, thinking I'd be targeting Indian audience; but things changed in less than a year. Currently, over 70% audience are based in English speaking countries. Besides, I don't think we have good hosting service providers in India.

A slow website yes. If the website goes down due to hosting problems then no. Cutts said you won't lose your rank.

you should always make sure that you have a good page load time and if your site is not loading fast, it will hamper your overall search engine ranking.
