I originally posted this in the main section but got no response then realised that this was probably the right forum location for it.

I have a website based on anxiety & stress and want to push more traffic to it by selecting good keywords. From google adwords tool I have selected a few keywords that I think meet the right criteria but I would like opinions from others on whether or not they are a good choice or bad choice and the reasons why. Also the level of work you think would be required to push them to page 1 in Big G.

So from adwords tool:

[generalized anxiety disorder]
$2.96 avg cpc
Global Monthly Search Volume: 14800
All Competition (Google): 10,400,000
Exact Phrase Competition: 1,800,000
AllinTitle Competition: 28,600

[stress in the workplace]
$1.66 avg cpc
Global Monthly Search Volume: 3600
All Competition (Google): 779,000
Exact Phrase Competition: 130,000
AllinTitle Competition: 13,000

    Are these keywords intended for individual pages or for promotion?

    Good point Dean, I didn't make it very clear.
    I'm intending to create new content pages for the site based on good keywords and then to link back to those pages with the keyword in the anchor text.

    Before jumping into creating the site for any kind of keywords, you should:

    1. Define the monetize products or methods
    2. For general keywords with a lot of searches, adsense and amazon products are recommended.
    3. If you try to sell specific product, get long tail targeted keywords, a lot of it... you have better chances in conversion.
    4. Optimize you pre-sell from day 1

      Hi kkchoon,

      Thanks for your reply. Right now I'm purely looking at the keywords. The site is already developed and makes most of its revenue through Adsense then Chitika then Amazon in that order.

      Whilst the factors you mention are all important I want to solicit opinion on keyword choice for visitors only. Thus I'd like advice on whether you would go for either keyword 1 or keyword 2 or another keyword entirely.

      Hope this makes sense.

    The Broad match term generalized anxiety disorder is quite a competitive term with high search traffic. The exact match slightly less so with less traffic. Both have It would be a mistake to focus just on this term when Google's keyword tool returns 38 longer tail phrases with notably less compition. Get off the exact match and go for longer tail. That way you will rank higher for less. Ultimately meaning more clicks and lower CPC.

    [stress in the workplace] is also highly competitve but with less traffic. Also recommend here that you go for longer tail phrases if you want to lower your CPC.

    Which ever phase you go with capture all the longer tail variations and then let google show you which keywords to focus on. Google's very good at this. You can accomplish it all manually, including landing pages, in 3-4 hours spread over a couple of days.

    @Geejayz,

    Instead of telling you what I think, tell me what factors would influence your decision making when choosing a keyword phrase? Is it top 10 rankings you're after or is it a lower ranking on a more competitive kw phrase?

    How authoritative is your site? If it's pretty new and low PR (although this not always the defining factor) you've got your work cut out.

    Actually I will also chip in on those 2 kw phrases. Don't touch the first one. The second one is still not a great choice. All the sites in the top 10 are PR4 or higher and the PR3 site sitting in the top 10 has over 21,000 inbound links to the site.

    I would personally focus on phrases with less competition. Go for a softer target. Just my 2 cents

    Cheers,

    Now that you have chosen your keywords, your first step is to know what to do next and that is optimizing for it and focusing your sites mainly on them, so whenever you do get a click, it is bound to be one of those ads relevant to those keywords.

      Intending to hit the top keyword is actually a good idea. But in most of the cases it won't work. It is better you choose the keyword with lower search volume first, using the other higher priority keyword as a secondary one.

        @NZ Bryce:
        Thanks for your comments. I am trying to find good keyword choices for visitor searches - I'm not planning to pay for PPC. So I'm after terms that will get visitors to my site through normal search engine activity. Thus easy to rank for in the SERPs.

        @DeanJames:
        Your advice seems good. Essentially, I'm trying to find a keyword phrase that would be as easy as possible to push up the search rankings whilst at the same time being actively searched for. (The holy grail obviously would be a phrase that had a massive amount of searches but little or no competition). My problem is in trying to find the right factors to consider.

        Whilst the PR3 site you mention has 21000 incoming links - the anchor text in these may not be for my keyword phrase and thus I may still be able to outrank it (sidenote: is it possible to see what the incoming anchor text links are for a particular site?).
        Currently my site only stands at PR2.
