physical product niche, how hard to outrank major retailers?

The niche I'm considering is a physical product, something for the house. The top 10 pages don't look very competitive, low PR, low backlinks and few good links, etc but they are mostly major retailers like amazon, walmart, lowes, etc.

How hard is it to rank over these major retailers with good domain authority but very little links coming into the actual page I'd be competing against. Anyone have experience doing it successfully? Thanks for any insight!

They have more money and resources than you. If they started an SEO campaign you would be crushed. That being said most of the time it's other marketers out there linking to an amazon product that pushes the link to the top. If it's a new product or no interest then you are safe but it's kinda like living in a spider's web in my opinion or a goldfish living in a blender.

I like your analogy Mary Stevens

As mary has said many of these pages are affiliate marketers, as long as you do proper keyword research and apply appropriate SEO you will be fine.

      Good Luck

don't out rank them... out smart them.

ask yourself... what else does the product do and who else would want it.

for example... i could rank for "sleep number bed" and get crushed by people with deep pockets...

or i could go for "how to get better sleep" write a report on how to get to sleep and how the sleep number bed helps...

this works like a charm in EVERY niche :-)

          It's very good advice
maybe you don't compete with "prodcut name keyword" maybe you can dig a little deeper keyword or same meaning keyword..

'Coping With Anxiety for Goldfish living in Blenders' is a safe niche
