The one thing anyone who knows anything about SEO knows is that last year Google made it very possible to hurt your site with spammy links. One of those kinds of spammy links is forum signatures.

Its amazing but there are still quite a few people who show you that they do not know what they are doing by running around in forums (this one included) dropping posts with a whole list of keywords in there signature trying to rank. Simple equation

People stuffing and spamming keywords in their signature = people who do that do not have a clue about SEO in 2013

and as far as knowing anything should just as well be posting in the off topic forum because whatever they are saying - its has nothing to do with good SEO.

Good SEO and keyword in forum sigs - red alert - no know SEO

There I said it

What's worse is when you see "SEO Experts" keyword stuffing their signatures. That's just hard to see...

I'm not sure, but I believe Google just ignores backlinks from forums altogether. It's not bad, it's not good -- it's just nothing.

The other reason is just direct traffic and making people in the forum aware of the existence of the website. Like said above, if SEO experts are posting on SEO forums, then it makes sense for them to have their link in the signature not for the purpose of ranking, but to get new clients from that particular forum.

I've seen loads of threads with so called SEO experts stuffing and spamming keywords in their signature.

Maybe they haven't caught up with the latest SEO trends.Kind of ironic.

Links can hurt your site now. By putting a number of posts and then stuffing your sig with keywords you are potentially harming the site

Sorry thats not a good answer. If you want to get traffic from this site you do far better by putting the offer in your sig not a bunch of keywords. NO one is talking about not using your sig at all. Its putting keywords in the sig that shows the expert is no expert.

The other silly thing is that they are exposing their keywords and their sites to reverse engineering

I'm not good in seo but I agree that spammy links can highly affect a website especially a forum website. What confuses me is that I saw many websites that still have high rankings even if they have lots of spammy and affiliate links.

I think the only reason people still believe in shady links is because people still sell them. People only still sell them beccause people still buy them lol. Its like a catch 22. Just leave them to it.

However, buying High PR backlinks on pages (not domains) with low OBL is still a good idea, especially if contextual.

entertaining if nothing else.

I'm not sure, however, that real gurus ever said much
about forum sigs. Anyone who touts them as the end all,
sure, they're a little daft.

Anyone that reads what google publishes, knows that google
has published forum link guidelines. And anyone that did
not know that google published a little something on
forum spam links, well, they're just not looking under
the right rocks. And that, is a sign of who you can trust.

In that case, what if google are only saying these things to get people to create quality content for there websites. Mabe they cant be bothered to change anything so say a few things, and publish a few articles about these methods not working anymore. Afterall, they are always on about wanting google to be about good user experience.

They never say this stuff doesn't work. Just what you should be doing,
or not doing. The choice is yours. Google does not run the internet, the
world, or anyone's life or business. They also state, in a roundabout way,
that they do look for these things. Ignorance is no excuse. Google could
care less if you follow what they say or not. But if you choose one way,
well, that is your choice.

How many times should one be told not to drink and drive? Does anyone
actually need to be told not to drink and drive? Do people drink, drive,
and make it home alive? Of course. So? Stop telling people to not
drink and drive?

There are certain types of forum based SEO that are dead.
And there are certain types of forum based SEO that are just emerging.
I like to think, I work toward the latter.

I still go by the pretense that Google judges individual pages as authorities unto themselves. And holds no biased to platform.

I dunno. It seems to me that Google is pretty good at noticing forums plus beyond the footprint issue there is also the fact that forums generate ton loads of links divving up the juice. This page has all the regular links and then the links for usernames and signatures.

I've seen a page amass a bit of authority but the sig links are always going to degenerate toward trash and then theres the sheer number of them from the same source if you are contributing. I can't see any of this activity being any good ever again
