Importance of Choosing the Right Keywords

Hi fellow warriors, recently I have seen people start websites, and then they tried to get traffic through an SEO campaign. They were told to do keyword research with so and so many searches per month, this and that high search volume etc.

Anyways, my point is that I think many website owners who start SEO campaigns target too competitive search terms. I think it would be better to set a long-term goal and then set short-term goals. Then you can get some traffic through easier to rank for, long tail keywords in the beginning. This will ensure that you don't run out of money in your chase to the top of Google and help your credibility in Google's eyes.

I hope this helps someone, good luck!

    This is good advice Felix...

It's the old low hanging fruit analogy...

You can work towards high volume high comp keywords for a long time before seeing any return, so its wise to go for easy (less volume) keywords first, this way you'll at least be getting some traffic while you work towards the tougher ones...

One more point most people don't think about is, you can spend months/years working towards a keyword only to find out it doesn't convert when you're finally ranking for it... If you plan on putting a lot of time and energy towards ranking a tough keyword, you may want to consider throwing some paid traffic at it and see what kind of results it brings before working to rank it...

I think you're better off choosing a niche where you aren't reliant on Google, Bing or anyone else promoting your site.

If you can't get traffic from real people who enjoy coming back to your site, I think you're missing the big picture of a long term business plan online. Making money is ok, but a long term business is the only way to real financial freedom online.

I agree with you, if you are selling a product or service you should not rely on organic search traffic as the lifeblood of your business. You need real visitors and real people to interact with, to build a relationship with.

Right choice of keywords make easier for clients to find your business. They bring traffic and business leads. I always advise businesses to target first their local audience and then move to target other areas.

On the other hand, If you don't target competitive keywords you won't be getting longtail searches for those competitive keywords.

You can target the keyword auto insurance & realistically not expect to rank #1 for auto insurance while picking up a lot of longtail auto insurance keywords.
    1. Target competitive keywords.
    2. Track incoming search phrases.
    3. Optimize for the longtail incoming search phrases to rank higher.
    4. Repeat...

After years of reading "brainwash" strategies, I like this tactic the most. Thinking to get attachable incoming phrases ideas in WMT, when they glue itself to basic kw.

some of the best keywords i have ever found were simply coming up with them in my head.

    I would think

"if i was into subject a, what kind of things would i be searching for?"

Sometimes after getting phrases and putting them into googles keyword tools you can find some GOLDEN keywords, just by trying to think like you target audience

Im also a fan of ranking for low competition keywords/phrases in a niche first, because the readers of those articles may build some backlinks for you, making it easy for you to rank for the harder keywords in the future.

I start by eating the Steak before I move onto the Vegetables. But I plan out the eating of the entire meal, before I've even ordered.
Sometimes the Steak is a little too hot when it arrives. So I might just cut it up in smaller pieces and mix it into my potatoes.
But by the end, my plates clean.

But I'm there for the Steak, not just the Gravy
