Site before the Company?

Understanding that the longer a site has been online and the more pages/blog posts/links/etc... that can build up over time the better it is for SEO. I have a home remodeling business that I'm going to open in about 2-3 years but want to start working on the marketing side of things to have a jump start. I've learned to do these things through a small affiliate site I've worked on.

I would like to buy my company name, build the site and start creating content. This is a bit aggressive in the sense that I don't have the business name registered or trade marked yet and it's 2-3 years away.

I want to start the site now because there is still a lot I have to learn about the industry and I thought reading, learning, and posting content would be a great way to educate myself all while building up the site over a 2-3 year period.

Does anyone see anything wrong with doing this? could someone steal my company name even if I bought up the domains already? any thoughts?

  • I don't know where you are but in the UK you can register a company for under £30 online. You can then let that company lie "dormant" until you need it. You still file annual returns for tax but because you haven't traded yet it's very simple & you can do it yourself.
    In the UK you have to pay around £30 a year to keep the company. It's a very inexpensive way of keeping a company name on hold & I have used it myself a couple of times.
    Do a search for dormant or non-trading companies for your country to see if this may be an option.
    It would be a shame if you built a successful site & someone nicked the company name from you.
  • I am doing exactly the same thing at the moment, but im planning on launching in about 6 months, or sooner if i get 2k visitors to my site a day.

    Id say register the name, about £35 and just carry on as ussual.
  • Ok, just checked with my state name register and I can register the name before actually being in business. All is a go! thanks all.
