Blogs and "likes" "sweets" "google pluses" etc

If I have a site and make a blog post, for example: www.mysite.com/blog/PostA and that new post gains tweets, likes etc. Do those social signals count towards the main domain or just the blog post itself?

Thanks for the clarification. I ask because I was hoping that's how I would generate social signals to build up my home page, via blog posts.

    Well, both really...

Initially they will just help the individual blog post. As you continue, Google notices that a lot of your content is getting attention and that helps the domain overall, and makes getting rankings easier and easier.

  • Bluehabit,

I’d like to add that search engines serve pages to their users and not necessarily domains as a whole. A search engine will try to find the most relevant document for a searcher’s query. It won’t return a root domain for example if some other page on the site contains the searchers terms.

Social signals work in much the same way. If there is content (in this case a blog post page) that has been interacted with on social media and it is relevant to a user’s query, that page will rank well in search and not necessarily the root domain. Anythingmarketing’s response does have some validity though because Google will serve results from domains that are consistently seen as relevant by users.

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

If your counting on social to rank your page/s it's not going to happen. Now using social media to promote your site & maybe traffic building real backlinks might work out for you, but social itself isn't going to do anything as far as direct SEO efforts.

Thanks for chiming in Yukon. Yes I realize this, my website is already ranking decently. This is not an attempt to boost ranking via social signals. It is more to "future proof" for when google starts weighing social signals more heavily (as they claim they will do).

It will have some SEO value as more attention is paid to social shares these days and it can influence your rankings.

Social sharing is a great thing though as its free promotion of your blog post. You should never rely on traffic from Google, it could be gone tomorrow. Thats why it's very good if you have a decent audience that shares your content.
