There are two fatal mistakes I know people make with the adword tool. First, you have to select the exact match type to get a more accurate result. Next, the competition shows the number of advertisers bidding for a particular keyword, and not the google search competition.

To find the search volume for a particular country, click on "advanced options and filters" and select the country from "location and language". When you've done this, the search volume under "local monthly searches" will reflect to searches for the country you selected.

I hope this help. You can read this article if you need more clarification. Keyword research|Adwords Google keyword tool

Thanks. I want to know the complete breakdown for every country. Looks like that won't be possible. I own a .com with huge exact matches, an EMD

If your global and local search figures are the same, you have almost certainly set Locations and Languages to "All countries".

If you want to get an idea of country specific breakdowns, then the best place is:

dee100, use the Advanced Options and Filters tab.

You can set preferred country, language and device type there.

Local Monthly Searches are in the location and devices you select.

I have a feeling that you might be making a mistake. You said x million global monthly searches and x million local monthly searches. Are these figures the same? If so, then you have not selected any country.

Next, check your keywords and make sure that they are in square bracket like this: [keywords]. If it doesn't appear like this, then you have not selected the exact match option. I can't remember having seen a keyword with millions of monthly searches, they must be short tails, untargeted and very competitive.
