    It doesn't matter.

There are so many people who (understandably) won't click on "bit.ly" links anyway that SEO concerns are the least of the problems involved in using "bit.ly".

Thanks, the links would be in buttons however, the visitors would not actually be clicking on a link called "bitly" - so my question still stands based on the SEO risks involved that is all?

not an seo concern, but instead of using bitly, I use a "redirect plugin" combined with a "Hide post from navigation" for Worpress. That way users won't bypass your affiliate and the url won't be an ugly bitly url.

    Hope this helps

Hey thanks for taking the time to respond, I only have the shortened URL's inside download buttons so the visitor never sees the ugly links anyway. So based on that, I guess I'm good to go and don't need to worry about anything.

Yep, my only concern was that Google may not like such links, thus they may penalize websites for it, however based on the responses it would seem that is not the case at all.

Try Google's goo.gl shortener, it would be pretty ironic if Google punished you for using another Google product (but not impossible). Or you can create PHP redirect files on your server. Just create a new folder from your main directory and put all the redirects inside.

Anytime, I had this same problem when I first started. Unless you're promoting tons of products PHP redirects is the way to go. It looks a lot more professional than shortened links do.
