    Sure, you track where that 12k traffic is coming from before it disappears. Not tracking traffic & waiting for something to go wrong isn't very helpful longterm.

      Exactly! You need an investigation. Your Google Analytics data will show you if you lost your SEO or referral traffic. If it was SEO traffic, check your rankings to see if there's a ranking drop for any of your keywords. In the worse-case scenario, you might have your site disappear from Google altogether, so check out your GWT account to see if you had any link spam notifications.

    Go into your cpanel stats if you have them for two and three months back and see where your traffic was coming from compared to now.

    Think if you have changed anything that could have changed how google sees your site.

    Some people got caught in the updates and the traffic has gone down, but it could be something else. You won't know unless you look.And as Yukon says, keep track.

    I think, your site is penalized, or some strong backlinks were removed, or you have made major changes within your site..

    My first guess would be a rankings drop. Which is pretty easy to spot if you're properly tracking everything.

    Did you verify where those thousands of traffic came from before it went down to 1k? I’m hoping you did so that you’ll understand why it is so. What you can do right now is go to Google Analytics and investigate on what exactly happened.

    This should remind everyone about the importance of installing a tracker. I’d love to know what you find out so I’d also learn from your experience.

    there are many factors why does a website decreases its traffic 1 is competition, 2 got penalized, 3 you backlinks to other website decreases due to closure of website or removal of links from them.
