Relative value of linking types

I subscribe to Angela's link packets and I find it great value for money. I'm sure these links contribute something to SEO success and for the low cost involved they are almost a giveaway.

At the same time, I have to wonder how well the search engines are able to differentiate and value different types of links and link context. For example, I doubt that a link in a user profile, though useful, could have the value of a "content" link or a link in some more meaningful context.

Aren't the search engines smart enought to recognize a self-generated link such as in a user profile and to value it less than a link based on content or other context generated by others?

In other words, of how much value are these dozens of links quickly left in user profiles and similar places and then just as quickly abandoned?

    Hi David,

Yeah the search engines do determine the "value" of links - so depending on the source, forum/profile links aren't great unless they are on top quality domains etc etc.

The trouble is, there is no "real" way of determining a value of a link. Our best bet is to just keep building them unless of course you are paying for the links, you need to try and get an ROI.

SEOMoz have a cool tool called Linkscape which shows some factors used to judge the value of a link. (Sorry I cant link yet as I'm still new here).

Hope that has helped in some way.

I use Angela's links too, but alone they don't do the trick so to speak. It is my opinion that Angela's links help the google "trust rank" factor. By using Angela's and PJs backlinks to increase your trust rank it makes the other more traditional SEO like article marketing that much more effective. At least that has been my experience...

Your best bet is to rely on your reader's trust in my opinion. They will be doing all the backlinking for you if your site is that inspirational.
