Best tool for long tail keywords

Just use Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Put a keyword then check for Ad group ideas and Keyword ideas, the compare the keywords depending on exact match traffic and competition.

Another vote for Long Tail Pro. THe thing I like is that you can start with several seed keywords, it is very FAST, and the keyword competition analysis is fairly accurate based on my use. Great tool.

Because you are specifically looking for long tail keywords, LongTail Pro will give you the long keywords. Otherwise Google Adwords Keyword tool is good, it'll give you all, but you can also use it with more options. Compare both tools, you may get good results in your search.

Hi Andrew,

I use Google Keyword Tool.

Let me share with you my personal strategy when finding Long-Tailed Keywords (LTKWs).
Every time I receive orders for keyword research, I make sure that these parameters are met:
Low Competition
Global Monthly Searches (GMS) of at least 5000
Cost-Per-Click (CPC) of at least $1.00
At least 30 daily searches on Google
No more than 150,000 competing sites

Now, while searching for those terms that pass all these gatekeepers by 100 percent, I stumble upon on keywords that are somewhat close to meeting these gatekeepers by 100 percent. I set them aside into a different column in MS Excel. When I'm done scrubbing my data, all keywords that are almost close to meeting all those parameters are candidates as LTKWs. I normally call them as Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) terms, however.

Bad advice here...

First of all, the 'Competition' in the Google Keyword Tool has NOTHING to do with the level of competition in SEO terms. It is a scale of the level of competition among AdWord buyers (It is the Google AdWord Tool afterall.). If you are going to use that metric, I would argue you should be doing the opposite. You should target keywords with 'High' competition among AdWord buyers. If nobody is bidding on a keyword, chances are the less money there is to be made with that keyword. If it has a lot of competition, that is probably because it is a much more profitable keyword.

As far as search volume, I don't know why people set any kind of a standard minimum number of searches. It should depend on what you are trying to sell. In one niche I am working in, each sale results in between $2500-3500 in profit. In a sub-niche for the same project, about $15,000 in profit off of one sale. For that project, I'll target keywords that only get 12-20 searches a month because I do not need tons of traffic to make it profitable.

On the other hand, if I was only making a couple of bucks per sale or built a MFA site (which I would never do), then I would want much higher search volume.

No more than 150,000 competing sites

This part drives me nuts. It is the stupidest concept in all of IM. I do not know why people keep regurgitating this. Every single keyword has the same number of competitors. They all have 3. That's it. #4 through 150,000 are all insignificant. There could be 6 billion results in the index. It does not matter. You have to figure out if you can get in the top 3. About 90% of the traffic goes to those 3 listings.

The Google Keyword tool CPC has nothing to do with monetizing ads on a website, that CPC is for Adwords (ads in Google search). If your running Adsense on your own site/page (Google Display Network), use the Google Contextual tool CPC, then divide by 2 for a rough CPC estimate.

Terrific post by ContentWritingPhD - really great advice. I would only add some very small things that I do in addition:

1. Watch for seasonal fluctuations (a "best beaches" type keyword may look great if G is looking back on the summer months, but may fade in the winter)
2. CPC and GMS are related - I'll go with lower GMS for higher CPC
3. Beware of the future - e.g. that brand new product or fad may look like it has little competition but the competition could suddenly explode

I got a question about that statement I highlighted in blue.
Wouldn't it better to use a keyword with a HIGH GMS and CPC at the same time instead of choosing LOW GMS and HIGH CPC keywords?

Google Keyword Tool is such a bad tool for keyword research let alone generating long tail keywords. It doesn't even have 1 of the key functions of keyword research which is checking the difficulty of the keyword.

Like Mike said whoever says the competition tab in GKT is the difficulty of the keyword, that person doesn't know what he or she is doing.

What I use is UNF + Keyword Researcher. It beats out GKT and 90% of the current keyword research tools in the market today. Here's an article about those 2 keyword tools: Hidden Guide To Keyword Research

I find UNF to be very inconsistent with actual difficulty. I do run keyword through it, mainly for the handy domain checker. But personally I would find a mix of both Market Sam and Keyword Blaze, give a little more depth to things.
But the best comp checker of all is generally your own country target based browser. Good Keyword research being the foundation of everything moving forward. I don't really like handing it all over to a software.
