How does required duplicate content (terms and conditions, etc.) affect search? - YouTube

The only issue is content which is keyword stuffed and spammy.

Hey, cool post! That was always a bit of a question on my mind. And in the space of little over a minute you've put my worries about that to rest! Thanks dude!

Matt Cutts may know all, but that doesn't mean he is going to tell you all. He is telling you what Google wants you to know.

I would always be skeptical of what good ol' Matt tells you.

Not saying it is true or not, just say'n.

You're extrapolating that brief video into a broad conclusion about all duplicate content, which is not the question Cutts was answering and not the answer he gave.

You may have missed the point where Cutts said duplicate content from legal terms or required disclosures may not be counted, but it will not create a penalty..

If anything, Cutts said there is a duplicate content issue in that it may not be considered, which is pretty much what you see in the search results. The fact is 'duplicate content' across many sites will not repetitively show in the search results.

Moreover, if you have a lot of duplicate content, such as from manufacturer product listings, that is where Panda has whacked a zillion sites.

That concern from duplicate content, which is real and well documented, is what gave rise to the question about having duplicate legal terms or required disclosures, and for those very limited terms Cutts said there will not be a penalty. He certainly didn't say legal terms pages, duplicated across many sites, would rank.

Hey Kurt, thanks for making it even more clear.

In my first related post above I was thinking not from the perspective of someone who has lots of other peoples content on their website, but rather lots of other people having MY content on their website. My take-away was that I would not be penalised for that. that's what I was pleased about.

However, I can see that if someone has only other peoples content on their own website they will pretty much be wasting their time.

And that all makes perfect sense really. I think the first line of my signature basically underlines the point.

Lol, build a site of 100% scraped Amazon pages & get back with us in a month or two, let us know how that works out.

Google has mentioned scraped ecommerce pages/content slaps on their blog, look it up.

well, but when you think about it, things like news and press releases are always distributed across a large number of websites. The same piece of news is published on innumerable sites and, for what I know, google doesn't penalise that kind of "duplicate" content. So again, it goes back to the "spammy" and "keyword filled" duplicate content...

Press releases with anchor text are now against Google's terms and conditions, but a betting man would say they still won't produce as much value anymore.

Mass guest posting is also now against the terms and conditions, so you're not just screwed for duplicate content. Original articles won't be counted too.

I know people say Google getting is to pay for ads is a myth, but you can't block every free marketing method and still deny it.

It's a bit like saying you didn't eat any chocolate before dinner when it's covered all over your lips.

News sites are hand-approved by Google and have their own seperate algo and SERPs. If you have a news site that's been approved by Google, go for it.

And while Google may not "penalize" duplicate content, Google does have a duplicate content filter, which works across multiple domains.
