Traffic from other sources does help because it tells Google that the site may be popular and worth a few more places up the ladder. Besides relying on Google traffic is good whilst it's there but if you were to lose that then these other sources could just keep your site alive.

      That's not true.

Google has no clue how much traffic most websites are getting.

Maybe not. But Alexa.com does know how much traffic a website receives and as far as I'm aware this can be one of the many ranking factors for a website.

Alexa is so inaccurate and can be easily manipulated that no one, especially google would use it to gauge real traffic.

Alexa has no clue. It's an educated guess. And it's really only "valid" for the top
1000 or so sites, and that's common knowledge anyway. Alexa was created
by that little ol' online empire Amazon.com as more of a way to spread
their online presence. It's for entertainment purposes.

Traffic by itself does not improve rankings, but, it could lead to better rankings
for specific keywords if it triggers sharing, linking, etc. But it's that secondary
stuff, not the amount of traffic.

Here's a test. Put your site in a big autsurf. See if your rankings improve.

As far as other replies, I cannot believe that people think that google is some
Wizard of Oz and knows everything. Like they are privy to other site's server
          data...

What google does with their own data is unclear. Youtube, G+, logged in searches,
etc. One could argue THAT traffic may play a role, especially if it goes way up.
Google is no fool. They want SERPS that are current and give what they feel
people are searching for. If people knew this, they would stop panicking when
checking their SERPS every 10 minutes.

There has to be some secondary triggers resulting from traffic, not just the amount of
          traffic.

If your website gains traffic from google, then definitely your ranking will increase, but if you have a direct visitor through social media, ads or any other channel, it will not affect on ranking. Ranking and traffic, both are different things.

Of course traffic is helping! And if you have your website on Google analytics and webmasters tools then google knows exactly how much traffic you are getting.

So if google sees that people are visiting your website while they search for some terms then of course it helps

But you can't expect to rank on keywords only with this!

This is false information Google has already stated that they do not use information from Google analytics to rank sites. The main reason being that improper installation of the code can make the data useless. Of course more traffic can indirectly help your ranking by getting more social shares and links but traffic in itself doesn't boost rankings. Now if the traffic is coming from Google that's a different story and Google does take into account your CTR and if you have high CTR for a term you will get promoted.

If the traffic is typing in a certain keyword in the search engines, and they are clicking your site as oppose to those above you, your rankings will increase, and those above you will decrease

        This I have tested.

It is similar to when you type "G" into your browser's search bar and they suggest the site you're mostly likely to choose, based on your previous searches.

Google may be number 1, but if you begin to choose Godaddy, it will become number 1.

This is an important thing a lot of people miss. Using a service like mechanical turk you can have people manually perform searches of your kw's that you appear on the first page for. Lets say your in position 7 and 30% of searches on that keyword click position 7, it makes sense for them to move it higher in the ranks. The important note to consider is bounce rate. If that same 30% that clicked on the position 7 result wound up with most of them bouncing back to google this will DROP the ranking.

It is a very important question asked. I was also thinking about this point. If you keep your account at google's ranking factor, it will confirm you that regardless how much traffic you get it will not effect your ranking unless you meet their ranking rules. But there can be other opinions. Would love to hear them.

Google doesn't track people by Analytics. They track people who are logged into their gmail accounts or other google properties. So yes, Google has a "good idea" how much traffic you get.

Go buy a banner ad on a site in your niche. After a couple weeks of getting a steady stream of traffic you'll notice your site getting a lot of rankings without backlinks. I'm talking about long tail and some medium tail keywords. Then build some backlinks. You'll get more bang for the buck.

This is not true. You may be picking up organic traffic because the banner ad you bought is a backlink from likely a high authority site, which of course will be good for your rankings.

Or it could be the banner is sending over traffic that later links to your site, but this is a secondary effect of traffic.

Google has no idea that the site you bought a banner on is sending traffic to your site as the traffic never passes through Google. Nor does it use gmail/chrome to gather data for rankings as this could be so easily manipulated with a bot.

Even if it has Google Analytics on it, traffic for the sake of traffic has no effect on rankings .

No ! It does only affect Alexa ranking a bit , google won't give you better placement for traffic. Only backlinks will help you to reach the destination - DOFOLLOW BACKLINKS ONLY.

No, Traffic does not help in improving ranking of a site or keyword. To get rank on a keyword you need to get backlinks from quality based or high PR sites related to your niche. And the traffic that comes through facebook is generally a refferal traffic which only increase the visitor of a site but not the ranking of a site...

I'd say this: traffic that sticks to your site (low bounce rate) will help your rankings. Traffic that bounces off won't do anything.

I guess it happens vice-versa, better ranking increases traffic,
Of course social signals are better to have to get direct hits (referral traffic) as well as having more social signals too may help in improving ranks, but that is NOT only one of the major factor to improve ranks....

Ive heard that the amount of traffic does not improve your ranking.

However many people believe that G track the bounce rate particularly if you have adsense, as they want to see that you are not manipulating people to click your adds or buying traffic. If you have a quick bounce rate you will also receive lower quality adds with smaller cpc.

I would also say that since there is no way for G to measure the site's traffic and we are aware that traffic is not considered as ranking factor, then traffic does not affect a site's page rank. Although if you have a lot of followers and content (with several link backs to your site) from social media sites, this does increase your site's page rank- therefore increases your site's traffic.

Yeah...traffics represent the popularity of your websites. But it's not a single factor to increase ranking of your sites if you use Google analytics and webmasters tools for your sites it's only for you to know how much traffic you are getting from every resources.

then what is google doing if they are not keeping the stats of the site's traffic.

Not the traffic itself but some components such as CTR that makes increase your rankings.

Let's say you're ranking for a particular keyword and you're in the #20 for that keyword, when people are always clicking your site as they see it on search results, it only shows that your page deserves to climb up higher in the rankings (trick: a clear description/title tag for your page).

However, you must ensure that your page really defines/describes your target keyword since you don't want to people to click on the link that goes to your page and go back to the search results again (this happens if you don't give them what they're looking for).

Of-course traffic is a great fact to increase of your site rank.

But the following tips may also help you.

      - Google Loves traffic from search engines. So, try to keep getting traffic from Search Engines though the keywords are not too popular on search.
      - Bounce rate of your website is also a great point to keep your rank. If people come your site and push on back button..you'll not get rank for long time.
      - Make your site on a specific keyword. It will be highly recommended by search engines.

What is more important to you, the amount of traffic you are getting to your site? Or the ranking you have with Google? A high ranking doesn't automatically mean more traffic to your site.

If you need to generate a generous amount of traffic to your site before you can rank high in Google, who cares! You have already created a way to generate traffic without the help of Google!

More highly targeted people no matter where they come from, will likely lead to more sharing, which leads to more people etc, eventually as the back links and buzz grows, it should improve things in Google.
