Yeah I don't even react to such topics but I have to reply to this one. You have to learn to ignore such topics, its been around 5 years since people are saying this.

      Only annoying because its stupid

At its worst, it means making web content less engaging for the reader but supposedly better for search robots and for the mysterious algorithms that determine the order in which results appear for a Google search
Which algo in the world are they talking about where you have to make your content less engaging for the reader in order to rank?

      Then theres the whole hullobuloo

Now SEO is dying. A striking post by Dan Graziano reveals that a Google search may display only 13% organic results; "the rest is ads and junk".
Well yeah based on a 13 inch screen and if you include the navigation section at the top and ummm what user gets distracted from the results by the navigation at the top?

Plus almost everyone I know half ignores the right adwords column or the click through rate would be a whole lot higher. what do I care about percentages if the users eyes stay to the left?

Now the only good point the article makes is about mobile but sorry...thats about apps not social. I'm not going to facebook to find the closest Pizza joint. Still marketers will have to adjust more and more to mobile.

Plus the article just ignores that you can do both. It trumpets that social gained 7% more how sites are found, ignores what kind of sites are found that way (what does a business care if more people are finding sites with funny pics more often by social?) and just glosses over the fact that even according to its own data more people STILL find more sites through search engines. Yet it proclaimed search engine optimization is dead.

The whole thing is as silly as the poster or posters here that run around touting social as the only way to go that ignore just like the article that most people are still using search engines and can't figure out to save their lives that you can do both without either of them being dead.

if seo is dead, then people will stop making less interest sites because on social media they won't get any traffic. SEO can't be dead or Google will die with it, and they won't let that happen. and YES social media will never take over search engines.

I disagree with it and i don't think so that SEO will be died in future. It is still alive and may be in future too.

Seeing that SEO is officially dead.
If anyone's looking to give away their blog networks, or 301 all of their inbound links to other websites.

I will build you a really great Twitter and Facebook Fanpage in exchange.

If SEO is dead, then why do a multi-million dollar companies invest their $$ into hiring an SEO team.. (I was one of them)

As my chief marketing officer said, "We have reached the cap for PPC, and now SEO is what we're lacking."

"As Google search results throw up more and more ads, using SEO to reach your audience is becoming increasingly futile. Could social media optimisation be the answer?"

Notice they did not say SEO is dead, contrary to what the OP would like to say.

Futile would translate to "I no longer want to adapt and learn, so....I'll look
under another rock." Well, that social rock is the same old same old.

Social media optimization does not work in the standard sense for IM and related
websites. And it sure doesn't work much for other big names either. People forget
the many lame campaign results from various big companies and even governments.

No people. Having a FB page and getting likes is not the answer. Using FB
to post links in groups, maybe. But that's not social media optimization.
That's spamming...er utilizing FB. Like email marketing.

Justin Bieber is FB and twitter optimized. Does it really matter? Sadly, even
if it did, we are not Justin Biebers.

Do people buy bieber's crap because he tweets or facebooks? Um, I'd
      say probably not.

Bieber got 30 million followers because he IS Bieber. And it does not
matter. But people do the opposite. People think getting a zillion followers
will make them Justin Bieber. It won't.

The one positive about the whole "SEO is dead" thing is that the weak will get out of internet marketing because they won't think they can rank. Fact is, as long as Google's SERP's are based on an algorithm (and it certainly should be for years to come) then SEO will be alive and well. Whether they like it or not Google can be "gamed"....the key is just figuring out what factors the algorithm is based on, weighted towards, etc.

Well, Big Kahuna, you're missing one point.

Many people who have switched to SMO no longer have to 'game' Google. Therefore they don't have to waste time trying to figure out what some third part corporation 'wants' from them. Instead they can focus on making the best, most shareable content that drives real traffic.

The funny thing is, Google gets a lot more interested in sites that already have lots of visitors than ones that get 100% of their traffic from search engines.

SEO is dead for people who are trying to get ranking by illegal way in a short term process. they think that they cant get ranking according to Google guidelines. after Google updates like panda and penguine google has beacome more specific with bad quality content and spam links and also ruined work of black hat SEO followers.
SEO will always alive still Search engine is there but process and techniques have changed.

I have seen some of your post PerformanceMan and I think the main problem here is to put it as an "either or game" is it not a matter to chose between Social Media and SEO... claiming that social media is replacing SEO is as idiotic as saying that Social media has no relevance in the equation.

What we should look for is to get bigger exposure and both (SEO and SMO) are tools to get more viewers to our offers.

He know this and his been told that many times but due to most of his points being blown up he chooses to resort to the complete lie that anyone ever said social does not matter.
