Does Google provide the best search results?

I just don't get it. I was ranking for a two word phrase, in number 3 spot first page for months, now on 5th page. Never built one single link to that article page. It was naturally linked to by others on some pretty major domains.
Article was donated by an expert in the field, who happens to have a masters degree and some serious writing abilities, about a 1,700 word article. Page got a natural PR2.
I got freaking wikianswers ranking on first page 3 spot with just the question and no answer?!?
But funny thing is, I see this all the time. Sure you get some good search results sometimes, but the majority of the time you get so many irrelevant results from Google.
I'm sorry, but who said content was king? The more Google changes their system, the more they inspire link building. They should outlaw the term "Google It." Oh well, just felt like ranting
