SEO for E-commerce sites

I have a few questions. Say you've got a huge ecommerce site with lots of products. The only descriptions you've got on these products are the generic manufacturer descriptions at the moment. Would you start with writing a unique description for each of the products, or would you leave those for the moment and write the descriptions/pages for the brands and categories themselves? I've been told that Google doesn't penalize ecommerce sites for the duplicate content on each product like it would say on a blog site with duplicate content.

Opinions?

yes it wont hurt, what I recommend is doing more onPage SEO, and for products, I recomend that you do reviews of them from external blogs to drive traffic and buyers.

I would start with the categories and move very quickly to the individual products. Ideally, you would have launched with 100% unique content, but this isn't a perfect world, and to some degree your right that Google won't penalize you for duplicate content on an ecommerce site. That being said, they are giving you any kudos either. Work as hard as you can and rewrite everything as quickly as possible. One last note, not only would I rewrite everything, I would also do it really well....make your descriptions blow away those that are competing in your niche.

The thing is, there are thousands of products, around 15000 I believe. We haven't even made a dent in them yet, but they are being very well written and are easily going to blow the competition away. That being said, we don't have any category or brand descriptions yet, so we're being told we should top the products and concentrate on those first. And then move to other pages like specific landing pages for products that sell the most. The current site isn't great, but we're building a new site that we're trying to launch in October. We know we won't have all of the products finished by that time, but we have broken them into categories as far as what sells best, then the next best, etc. We should have all the category 1 products completed before the launch.

That's a HUGE site.... Have you thought about make several niche sites or are those products really one niche? I like large sites but that strikes me as too large, too vague, etc. I could be wrong but just putting it out there. Good luck!

It's an automotive site with aftermarket parts. It's also a very successful retail business with several brick and mortar stores that have been in business for over a decade.
