I have a pet supply e-commerce store with unique products but several categories and product lines. My store is not doing well do the fact that my competion is very well established and has been around for a long time. You know all the big name pet supply chains.

This may be a stupid question, but I think it is important enough to risk asking it anyway.

I have been thinking of breaking down my store into several very small niche stores using new domain names.

My plan is to use long-tailed keywords that ultra pinpoint my audiance for each item. It would make the potential audiences much smaller but i think in the long run actually lead to more business.

Can you advise or comment?

I appreciate your thoughts.

I think you've just had one of those kajinnnng! moments where the penny starts to drop. If you can add value to the smaller long tail niche keywords in your field then you should exploit them fully. If that means making a couple of extra blogs to target those phrases then so be it. It'll cost you the domain name and a bit of thoughtful writing / images / video. You can link them back to your main domain anyway so there's nothing to lose and everything to gain by making these little puppies your own.

Someone has got to be there for the customer looking for products to buy in small niches. The big boys might want to leave money on the table by focusing on the big stuff, but that is why smaller niches present such a great opportunity for those who do not want to compete with the big boys. It means they do not have to pay the price that comes with playing in the big leagues. They can get some great content, rank fast, and pick up those little sales. If they keep going this way, they will have a big portfolio of sites that are providing them with a nice passive income. More power to you.

I have no problem with competition and I am willing to wait it out for a better ranking on the main site. I will not be disbanding the main website. I am just trying to think outside of the box. I think that there is money to be made in the meantime from a few smaller targeted sites. I noticed that for a couple of custom products I offer there is a decent number of long tailed searches each month.

I appreciate all of your candid responses. Can anyone recommend an SEO person/firm to analyze my current main website?

Here main thing is competition, if you don't want to compete with your big competitors then small niche is good method of making money.

Why do you think you'd be better off with several smaller sites as opposed to your bigger one? As far as the SEO advantage, you'd be much better off with your one site vs dividing your linkbuilding efforts. Your main site would end up with more content and more juice flowing internally. This is good if you're sticking to the same broad niche because PR flows internally much better than it does across separate domains. In other words, I see no reason for you to target those longtails with thin niche sites vs targetting them with your main one. Unless of course you just really want to blow more time amd money.

Just break your main site down into categories and treat each category as if it was a niche site all on its own. You may want to look into a silo site structure as well.

Edit: I can analyze your site if you wish. Got some extra time to kill over the next few days which is rare.

    I wouldn't.

Your main problem, as you've said, is competition. To resolve your problem you should find your way to the customers avoiding the competitor.

Raising brand new stores will take you time and money, and I'm quite sure that if you put that time and money into your current store and marketing you'll be fine.

Good start would be to specify your problems and make a plan how to resolve them one by one.
