Ecommerce site - product descriptions and duplicate content.

Hi,

Many of our products are also sold by other suppliers, and often our competitors have simply used the manufacturers product description word for word. My question is, would ourselves using the same description be penalised? Unfortunately we do not have the resources to write up a unique product desription for every item we sell, so what would best practice be in this case?

Many thanks in advance!

Matt

    Matt,

You're not alone. Before my clients (owners and/or webmasters of e-commerce sites) came to me, they all asked the same question. So here are the pieces of advice I can share with you.

    1. As far as the talk about "duplicate content" is concerned, it's a matter of who posted the unique(Copyscape-passed) product descriptions first. If you posted your product descriptions first and Google bots were able to crawl it and list it on Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) even before anyone copies the exact same content, you're still the winner to Google's eye(or eyes if you think Google has two, kidding). Anyone who copied your content did me a favor. Why? Because sooner or later that copy-cat will find me to rewrite the product descriptions he/she copied from you.

    2. You said you have no resources to rewrite the existing content of your product descriptions. Not true. Why? What the heck am I doing on the face of planet Earth?

I hope I was able to provide some clarity, somehow.
