1/ Does it make sense to use short urls instead of the long ones in e-commerce store?
For example url www.electronics.com/modelxxxxxxx instead of www.electronics.com/smart-tv/panasonic/modelxxxxxx ?

I don't know if:
a/ it makes sense from ranking perspective
b/ it's not against some google rules

Thank you in advance,
J
#search engine optimization #lenght #url
  • IMO I would go with the second option as it is more descriptive and exactly what someone would be searching for. It isn't against any sort of Google rule...

If you look at the URL on product pages for sites like Amazon, most of URL is for tracking. Everything in the URL after the is unnecessary as far as SEO. If you delete everything after the it doesn't cause a 404.

Both versions of this URL will take you to the same page:

    1) http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-Double-Zoom-18-55mm-55-200mm/dp/B00CCGZ6PO/ref=sr_1_4?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1377126353&sr =1-4

    2) http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-Double-Zoom-18-55mm-55-200mm/dp/B00CCGZ6PO/ref=sr_1_4

I prefer a short compact URL because it's just easier to know where your at on the site, I doubt it has much impact on SEO as long as the URL points to a working page (not a 404 error).
  • Thanks I was just wondering about this myself the other day.
  • @yukon - thank you mate. Your explanation makes a lot of sense to me. I'll probably try to keep simple paths to products without shortening urls

    • This question is kinda related...

If I am targeting "life sayings" as a keyword, should I title my post exactly as "life sayings" or will "100 awesome life sayings" be just fine?
