Broken links on unimportant pages

Hi all

Quick question :

Do broken links on UNIMPORTANT pages of a website matter at all regarding SEO ?

Due to some site restructuring , we have old articles (from 2010) that have links broken . We don't care about those articles and have no intention on fixing (most probably removing) the pages unless it's required to be dealt with for SEO purposes.

I'm guessing we can also just add them as disallow/ for crawlers?

    You should always redirect dead links/pages to live web pages.

    What I do is a sitewide redirect for any dead links/pages instead of having a 404 page. IMO a 404 page is useless for traffic & waste PR. A sitewide redirect (instead of a 404 page) only takes a few seconds to setup.

    This way If I ever have a broken link I don't know about, it automatically gets redirected back to my index page (or whatever page I want).

  • I would suggest you to use 301 redirection on those pages, and redirect them to your index page.. so that whatever link juice they carry won't go waste and your index page will be benefited.

    So the best thing to do is sitewide redirect to my homepage I guess ... or maybe it will be better if i redirect all those dead links to the page that has the article index so users will automatically see the new articles.

    Dont think it makes much a difference though , does it ?
