I can give you a suggested tool kit that can get you started going in the right direction. I will suggest to you the 2 free tools I use everyday for my SEO strategies.

Google Keyword Tool: Use this tool for the first step find keywords that have low competition and high search volume. If you want to get ranked for a keyword as fast as possible, and this will not be overnight find keywords in your niche market that have more than 2,000 searches a month globally but not more than 10,000 searches per month. the more searches a month the harder that keyword is to rank for.

SEO4FireFox: I use this tool for the second step of any seo strategy and that is competitive analysis. This tool will show you how many links are pointing to the pages coming up in the 1st 10 search results for a given keyword when you type it in the Google search bar. I will research the first page results as this is the page we want to show up on for a given keyword. Once you know how many back links your competition has pointing to their pages you will have a good idea of how many you need to build to compete for that spot.

Those are the 2 main tools I use to do my initial keyword research. The last step in the most important phase of the seo process keyword research is to look at the top 10 search results and see how many of them or main domains ex: yourdomain.com and how many of them are sub-pages of that domain ex: yourdomain.com/subpage. If the majority of the pages showing in the top 10 results are subpages you are a go for that keyword.

The rest of the process is implementing on-page SEO: interlinking website structure, and Off-page SEO: building back links.

    Hoped that helped

    Cheers

For beginners for sure you should check out Moz.com.

Don't sign up for their product though, as it is absolute shit.
