Interesting. Is this what happens when you play with Pandas and Penguins?

  • Yahoo has been in #2 or 3 place for a long time, and close behind Google. I don't think it is anything but an interesting month where Google might be down a bit, and Yahoo is up.

In addition, ComScore (who did this report) still doesn't include the traffic from Tumblr in Yahoo!'s results. Once they do, Yahoo! will be well ahead of Google every month. (Tumblr is in 24th place all on its own I believe).

Yahoo has A LOT of properties out there, many of which get really steady traffic.

Ok. So this report is not just based on their search traffic. We're talking all web properties? I did not know that Yahoo! was actually competing with Google so well. Good to see.

It's not search traffic. It's not mobile. It's not networks of sites.
Most of the free world uses an android phone, youtube, blogspot, etc.

And it's only United States. They've been neck and neck for years.
It fluctuates back and forth. People like me, always skim through yahoo.
I love it. The difference between google and yahoo, is simple. Yahoo's
first page takes you to yahoo pages with the same news as google
news, but google sends you to another site.

What people should really gasp at, is that FB has always been very
distant. A fact lost on most who keep touting FB's billion userbase.

Keep in mind this is only United States, as stated. Yahoo Japan has
nothing to do with "yahoo," and uses google search.

Toss in the fact that google now places ads on various yahoo
pages, and what have you got? Google's hand all over the place.

Google has been smart to target mobile. Something yahoo has
no way of doing by itself.

Nobody seemed to ever mention google being second in 2011 and previous
        years...

I love yahoo. But it's a different animal than google.com.

I wouldn't mind having Googles problems.

Yahoo rose 2.2 percent to $27.66 at 9:54 a.m. in New York, while Google increased less than 1 percent to $870.50.

Seems like Yahoo is on the up and up. They have gotten more traffic than Google in the month of July. Google is still king, but 197 million unique visitors a month is nothing to sneeze at.

All the talk about Penguin this, and Panda that, and Yahoo is still easy as heck to rank in the top 3. Also Adcenter is way more relaxed than Adwords...

I love Google, even after they slapped my sites, but maybe it's time we give Yahoo alot more attention than we have been giving it

I am the same way. The little sales that trickle in from my affiliate sites, come from Yahoo, post Penguin update. I never intended to rank them on Yahoo/Bing yet they rank on top.

I think I will give Yahoo another look myself

Very true but not many people would consider Yahoo for pulling traffic even though it is still one of the top .... We are so much dependant on Google that Yahoo gets very less attention...
Google taught me the hard way, not to depend on Google. EMD's still work on Yahoo/Bing and can rank on top with out any backlinks. I've neglected Yahoo/Bing long enough.

I'll have to leave the Yahoo traffic to you then... For almost ALL of my sites, Google provides 10 times (literally) the traffic then does Yahoo. And, that's with my sites ranking HIGHER on yahoo than google. For me, my focus remains the Big G until the traffic numbers change.

Google still dominates the market, so they didn't shoot themselves in the foot or anything. All they did was put the ball in our court, it is up to us to make our next move (which is to find other traffic sources)

That's true, at least Yahoo provides real live support unlike Google which is dominated by automated responses and huge delays. They tend to like to dictate what goes on unlike Yahoo.

That stat about yahoo beating google for visitors had nothing
to do with search. Yahoo has no search. It's bing. I like
yahoo. I peruse the stuff daily. Good stuff. But I seldom,
if ever, search using yahoo. Not sure why people do not
realize that this game of visitors has been back and forth for
years. Yahoo, just 2 years ago, regularly beat google. And
these stats are ONLY United States, not worldwide. Nor do
they include stuff like youtube...or mobile. Every android user
uses google as default. And google maps? Man is there even
            another "maps"?

Besides, what would you expect when a former google exec
takes over yahoo? Oh I know. Getting google to place ads
on yahoo and trying desparately to ditch bing...that is what
yahoo salivates for. A slice of the google pie...and google wants
            that just as bad...stay tuned...

I would like to share that the results are from "unique visitors" and not "page views".

That's definitely a possibility. If that is the case and they sent out the emails last month we're bound to see a still high unique count next month. I'd be more interested in checking the month after.

I know a lot of people on the WF talk about how Google dominates... but really when it comes down to it, they deserve a lot of credit for everything that they have been doing over the last few years.

Even so.. I'm sad to see certain services go and I'm betting these also have a huge play in the search quantity..

Ie... Google Reader and it even seems like Google Feedburner isn't getting any attention and could result in it disappearing.

That article is a bit misleading. Judging from the way that other major news sources presented that story, it's not that Yahoo.com is beating Google.com, but that the traffic from all of Yahoo's websites combined is beating the traffic from all of Google's websites combined. Which simply means that Yahoo has a greater number of (popular) web properties than Google.

If you're simply comparing Google.com to Yahoo.com, then Google is still on top (at least according to Alexa, Compete, etc).

Eh, ya can't really trust much of what Alexa has to say. I see way different private software results than what Alexa is sharing on my own sites. For example I have one site which receives a massive amount of traffic and yet another one of my sites that receives far less has a lower search rank..

And I wasn't specifically stating that Yahoo.com itself was being Google.com, I said "Yahoo beat Google". Even overall that's pretty kick-ass!

And 80% in increase in shares from last year is even more interesting...

If you're after "real numbers", then I would definitely agree with you, since Alexa can only measure stats from people that have their toolbar installed. For overall "trends" for popular websites, I think it's a pretty useful indicator. For sites that aren't that popular, I don't think it's very accurate.

Judging from my own site's stats (in several various niches), Google still sends me a much higher percentage of traffic than Yahoo or MSN/Bing. Not that I really care, as the vast majority of my traffic comes from non-SEO sources these days.

I do think that Google is starting to face a lot more competition than they did even just a handful of years ago. Which, IMO, is a very good thing.

Who knows... maybe one day they will have so much competition from other search providers, that they will be forced to start showing relevant search results again!

I think a lot of folks have Yahoo (or Yahoo's home page) set as their web browser's home page; one reason for that is to catch up on the latest news as soon as they launch their browser. Surprisingly enough, Google's home page remains a blank canvas with a search box.

This is exactly the reason I have yahoo as my starting page. I do a lot of current event marketing and like to get access to the latest news as soon as I open my web browsers. However I do search with google 99% of the time. I guess if I wasn't an internet marketer I probably would end up doing my web searches from within yahoo homepage.

Ya know.. now that I think about it, it also probably has a lot to do with some of the recent changes in Yahoo's design. They're trying to be more hip and modern with their style.

I mean... Yahoo Answers looks completely different today than it did a few months ago.

And the purple accent colors make me think of Justin Bieber and other pop stars using the color purple in their outfits.. it might sound unrelated, but hey the color purple definitely caught on as a universal color instead of "just for girls".

You missed the point of the article. This has nothing to do with search engine traffic. Yahoo still trails drastically in that.

This is just traffic results among all the properties of Yahoo (and there are a ton of them) versus all the properties of Google (also quite a few).

Lot's of people use MSN as a homepage to get breaking national news. It is popular and safe for the workplace. I know, since I walk by hundreds of computers when I visit a work site. Many people use different computers and do not stay signed in for security reasons. MSN recently decided to make visitors log-in to see the MSN news page ....BIG MISTAKE.

People are often lazy and in a hurry to check out a breaking news story, Yahoo has been a benefactor in MSN's poor decision since Yahoo has a similar news page that you can still get to without logging in and has probably experienced a sharp rise in visitors, who in turn are most likely entering their search info on Yahoo since they are already there and this may be part of what has dug into Google's traffic.

      * UPDATE : I just entered msn.com into my browser and the news page now comes up again without asking me to log-in. MSN probably noticed the drop in visitors and returned to the way it was.
Now let's see if Google's traffic goes back up again.

Speaking of Yahoo beating Google, has anyone experienced this issue: ranked in the top 3 for the keywords you want in google, but in yahoo/bing you are on the 2nd or 3rd page.

I guess it just takes a long time for yahoo to update their algorithm?

Yahoo does not have an algorithm.

This whole thread is kind of corny, and full of non-information.

What would be news is if yahoo/bing beat google in search. Not even
      close.

I can't understand why people don't get the facts. This had nothing to
do with people using google search, android, youtube, blogger, gmail, or
any other such rot. It's about visitors.

I've said it so many times. Yahoo regularly beats google...if you would just
look at the last 13 years....they fluctuate!

But it's got nothing to do with SEARCH!!!!!!!!!! And yet, over and over,
people keep talking search. Yahoo has no search. It's bing. And bing
      sucks. Big time.

Oh and people ignore the fact that this is UNITED STATES data, not
the world. But sadly, people do not actually read or analyze much. Just
a headline..."yahoo beats google" and ignore the rest of the story.

Listen folks. FB does not beat google. And yet, people have never
ever pointed that out. That just does not make the news. I'd be more
shocked if I did not know it, that FB can't even beat yahoo.

You can explain here100 times that we do not talk about the SERPS but about yahoo as (news) portal - people here will not listen.

I understand that this isn't related to search but I would love it if Yahoo and Bing took up more of the market share from Google.

Then internet marketing and SEO providers will have 3 search engines to report on instead of just relying on Google. It would be a very positive thing in the SEO world for healthy competition

      Maybe you haven't heard...
      ....yahoo has no search.
....The world has other search engines. Baidu, for one.

Why would the SEO world want any "competition"? The gurus can barely
      keep up with one...

You can't choose to target bing over google, or vice versa. That makes
absolutely no sense, and I laugh every time I hear...

"I'm gonna ditch google and target bing!"

But none of those other search engines fight spam and illegitimate websites as much as Google.

In my experience, even Ask.com returns more relevant search results than Yahoo and Bing.
