August 21st update? Where? Are these Algo change tools any good or was Google warming up?

Alright so apparently there was some algo change according to a number of services but I have seen none of it. Check out the spike on august 21st across a number of algo trackers -

http://algoroo.com

http://serpmetrics.com/flux

http://mozcast.com (shows it on the 20th)

I'd say one tracker was hueeey but three or four of them? Anyone see any change on that day?

Perhaps google was running a test for a change that is about to drop?

I'm currently tracking about 5-6 sites and they are all going strong.
No fluctuations at all over the past 30 days.

All my rankings are strong, still no 1-3 for my bigger keywords. I have recently built two new sites and they are ranking all over the shop, mainly because they are new sites, so Google is looking to place them in right place I guess.

    Tracking
    85 Keywords
    3.5mil Exact Search
    High Comp

There was a slight fluctuation on and around the 20th. Nothing major in terms of bounce.
    +/- 1 Position For Page 1 Listings
    +/- 3 Positions For Page 2+

Seemed to be very neutral in terms of losses or gains. More to the side of gains really. As by today any loses have been recovered and any gains have remained or improved.
Nothing more then an average day to be honest.

I am still recovering from a manual review from a month ago. I see in webmaster tools, under the new manual actions tab, I had two sites with minor pentalies. The pentalies have vanished and my sites are coming back to the top of the first page again.

As for the the 21st of August, I do see one site dropping 20% traffic.....nothing to get alarmed about yet.

I have no paid links......but I did build several myself.

The one site affected is not mobile friendly....."Mobile, the time is now" Google just pumped out at the beginning of the summer.

I did recently try to optimize for a key word on that sites home page.

Too many variables to figure out what this one is.

All I know, the past 60 days have been a real downward slide for me, and it seems to have bottomed out in the past couple of weeks. I hope this is the end of the bleeding. I lost most of my recent purchases from Flippa.

    Not giving up yet.

I think it's an affiliate link targetted update.

Around June 2-4 Nik0 posted a "panda update" that killed his TV review site. One of my sites was also hit. I removed a bunch of amazon links (from 4-5 to 1 per page), I removed some <ahref> links and replaced with javascript instead etc etc.

Number wise: On June 2 the site got 251 hits. By June 6 it was down to 19!

On July 20 that site got 33 hits, on July 21 it got 260. I bet if you asked Dennis his 'comeback' was same date.

Next site: July 7, 267 hits. July 10, 48. This time I simply went and made a different change. August 20, 51 hits. August 21 (after the 'update') 168 hits and still climbing.

Since you guys (Mike, Kevin, etc) aren't big into Amazon/affiliates maybe you didn't notice the changes as much?

Data point. I'm tracking about 150 keywords on over 30 sites. It's been the typical "some up, some down, pretty good progress on this one, blah blah blah." In other words, in the last few weeks I haven't seen anything that made me wonder if there was some big algo change.

I didn't take the time to look for it with client sites. They'ed be sure to call me, before Mike's post. If there where any negative changes.

My stats where from my own personal site. (I've only got 1). And it's an affiliate site(Not Azon just direct Affi). And I use 2 ad blocks. Top and Bottom. Nothing site wide (Widgets), and about 30% of my pages are not monetized at all.

Dennis manages a gazillion sites, so maybe he could shed some light on this. Probably just a little algo Tremor. Whether its a Pre or Post Tremor is the question.

Fair enough point but I was referring not just to my sites or clients. I was also referring to this and other boards where there has not been much chattter on it. Like Dennis suggested Google I think noted they would not be making announcements for some updates but still you would expect some chatter from webmasters on it.

even in this thread you can see that people into affiliate sites haven't seen a big change on th 21st. does Google do pre-tests and rollouts and pull it back later? Dunno but seems interesting that all these services show a change on the 20/21st

I have only noticed how much longer it is taking for rankings to improved when building quality pr links, seems like things have been frozen for a few months now. It use to be like clock work, rankings would jump 7-14 days after links were found..

I noticed a change, and like others I think it was partly to do with number of affiliate links. I used a price comparison plugin that generated 4 links per retailer. I would sometimes have 16 links on a page just from this. I removed the plugin and traffic improved.

I also recommend anyone to find out which links have the best ctr, keep them, ditch the others and you'll hardly notice a difference in ctr but you will when it comes to ranking.

Massive traffic drop for one of my Amazon sites. Looks like it started 24th and continued downhill since then. It's only peanuts (maybe £20) a day. Traffic down from 1000 uniques to 200 uniques per day. Definitely something happened, but I know not what. There's been a UK Bank Holiday so I'd expect a drop in traffic for this site, but not to this extent.

All in all my results are neutral, although while looking through my graphs I do see that the majority of my sites did shift a bit around that timeframe. Some went up and some went down so the overall effect has been neutral. I should add that these shifts were roughly +-2/3. So nothing major to cry about.

Could be. I have an EMD as well and almost all keywords dropped from like #1 -3 position to like #4-10. Happened on the 25th. I'm hoping it will bounce back in a few days because the website is getting a lot of organic backlinks to it and it is pretty legit.

Three different algo tracking services showed a change around the same time. IF you read the Op you will see that is what its about, So yet another shot from you at everyone who does SEO and link building falls flat.

You should stop spurting crap. I ave basically no backlinks to my site i posted above. But it did have an EMD, which is why im thinking its that. If the people who have seen changes, for better or worse, could specify what there SEO looks like, either EMDs or how they build backlinks, if theybuy a lot of facebook shares and stuff etc we could gt a better idea of whats gwan.

Yeah, that'll give us a better idea of what's 'gwan.'

Google currently has 1 trillion pages indexed. 10 or so idle IMers speculating about what caused a changed to their rankings can't possibly reveal anything. It's just not enough data.

Well I think at this point the change was so subtle that it will be hard to pinpoint the cause. two things are interesting though

      1) it seems these trackers are somewhat accurate
      2) It seems marketers no longer run on forums complaining when there sites get hit by an algo change

    Hello,

We recently changed domains 4.5 months ago and saw about a 35% drop in traffic starting on 8/25. Could this update be targeting new domains? Below are post I have found about individuals with newer domains experiencing ranking loss.

-My traffic droped from an average of 50 visits per day to just 1 - 2 per day. My blog is 8 months old and I was shocked when I saw the drop. Here is a screen shot of my traffic drop. If anyone Can Hlp me I will be really greatfull !

-From what I can tell, a lot of the sites that were affected were either new or had changed domains in the last few months.

-You could be right. My 5 month old website that saw 40% drop in traffic has category/postname url structure.

-I have Seen Drop in the Traffic by 10% in my Blog (1 year old)

-My site (5 months old) traffic is dropped by 90% will it recover or not?

-So was there a penguin update or not??? I have one site that lost it rankings but that site was pretty new IMHO, so I gues it was because of the young age.

-On one particular website, I have noticed about a 75% drop in my traffic since about the 21st. To put that in perspective, whereas I was getting about 550-750 visitors a day…I am now getting around 150ish. My site was created in May of this year.

-something whacky is going on saw really old serps come back

-Huge drop in traffic lost almost 20% traffic today (8 months old)

I agree with the "new website" getting hit theory. All of my older sites (those older than a year) are doing fine....no change. However, a site I built 2 months ago, was ranking on 2nd and 3rd page for good terms, and I was getting around 30 uniques a day. That is until August 22nd when it has now gone down to not ranking anywhere (still indexed though), and 1 visitor a day. No crazy link building on this site so I'm positive I didn't hit any kind of link building filter. Must be some sort of update related to newer domains/sites.

What I see is an algorithm hit against "high street competing" affiliate sites (not all affiliate sites) just those competing with Amazon, Etsy etc. in their local market. The big boys Amazon, Ebay, Etsy etc. seem to be the big winners when this wave hits, taking back the 1-5 spaces in the serps for many counts. Started back in June, got a respite beginning of August, took another hit almost carbon copy like June around the 21st to 26th August.

To me, it looks like some kind of rollback to the June hit. I expect sites hit by this will come back to a degree. But another month down the line will succumb to the big boys again. The question is - what can these sites do in the meantime to avert another hit? Seems to me this one is down to site authority/age.

I do see this as a narrow (ish) hit, though. Mostly what you might describe as "high street retail goods". However, it does seem to have been pushed out through the world and particularly hits sites attempting sales outside of their arena. Guesswork, of course, but I'm laying it down here for historic value

I like Dennis's idea of trying these sites with some posts not using any outside affiliate links. For my site that got hit, I'm blatantly guilty of affiliate links on every page (not over the top amounts of outbounds and I'd rate my content as pretty good). I've started putting out good content without any outbound aff links to see if it does anything. I've also been using a geo-targeting tool, Go2geo, that has been extremely good in helping me target aff offers to different geo traffic, but this is just an aside at this stage. I do wonder though, because I've definitely lost a lot of particularly country specific traffic. (not blaming the plugin at all!)
