I saw that GKT was going away, so the last couple of days I have been trying to use it and I am having a bit of trouble. Currently I think it sucks, but I hope I will figure it out and get used to it.

Can I not choose exact keywords any more? I can't find a way to do that.

Local as against global seems to have gone?

Anyone know why they did away with the GKT?

Yo Tim, are you talking about the new Google Keyword Planner specifically?

If it's really holding you up, you should still have access to the keyword tool - go ahead and use that if you need to get on with this project for now.

As per your local vs. global question, as far as I've seen so far, all of the features I normally use are there, some are even more useful (just a little different).

Instead of the local/global settings, Google now allows you to geo-target a location... just select the country you're looking for the "local" stats of - here's how I did it for the US: http://i.imgur.com/4u4VMvr.jpg

You say I can still use the original GKT? How do I access that as I can't see a way to do it. I clicked on GKT in the drop down and am taken to the new version, which I don't really like it. Not adapting to the change very well.

Edit: Ah, I found the back button to the GKT, FINALLY. Man, I am blind in one eye and can 't see out of the other one. it was right in front of my face and I didn't see it.

What do you guys use for keyword research and estimating CPC? Id appreciate any advice as im not sure how advanced marketers could be using this tool that seems to be so off. Thanks

Why are you guys in panic mode, the new tool is showing the same data as the old keyword tool.

Click the Keyword ideas tab below the search box on the Keyword Planner page. Done.

I see 800 keywords for a search (Local, [exact]), downloaded the CSV with no problem.

This. GKP has all the features of the keyword tool PLUS many many more. You guys need to play around with it for an hour and get used to where everything is.

I've been having the same questions as everyone here... wondering about exact match, and why the numbers are so far off from the KW tool. I finally found a page that explains a lot.

      https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/3141229?hl=en

The most important part for me is the following:

With Keyword Tool, we showed you statistics for broad match by default with the ability to get statistics for other match types, like phrase and exact match. With Keyword Planner, you'll get historical statistics only for exact match. To decide what match type to use with your keywords, add the keyword idea to your plan and review the traffic estimates for each match type.

In general, you'll notice that the average search volume data is higher in Keyword Planner as compared to the exact match search volume data you got with Keyword Tool. That's because we'll show you the average number of searches for a keyword idea on all devices (desktop and laptop computers, tablets, and mobile phones). With Keyword Tool, we showed you average search volume for desktop and laptop computers by default.

I agree with just about everyone here... I don't like keyword planner!

It seems to be a strategic play by Google to control the number of queries via Google tool and to make everyone spend more and in short, make it hell. In GKT, I used to see Traffic estimates for different types(broad, etc.,) and CPC at very first screen, even before adding them to the ideas shortlisted. Here, In the first screen, It does not give the option to choose the match type and only in the plan screen, it shows that option. But no traffic estimates in that screen, you will only clicks, impressions. So what if I want to add a new keyword and see its traffic? I'll have to go back right?

Plus, is it showing only exact search estimates at first screen? or is it a broad estimates?

With some quite hours spent, no cellphones, no TV, no interviews etc etc, you can learn how GKP, will not only save you hours, but save you $$$'s on getting a great combination of suggested words for your sites/ads/landers/cpa offers, that are far more honed that the old version.

Anyone who has no idea what Google Keyword Planner is, simply go to your gmail account and sign up for it!

Have a play and learn from your own tutoring, much more fun that way, when you are confident, chuck a $20 in the ad balance and see what you have learnt :-)

I was about to launch into this thread and say, "hey, give it time so you can get used to the new tool", and then I tried it for myself. Maybe for PPC it's better but for a quick keyword search for SEO purposes I had to click this, click that, check this box, select this from a drop down etc. etc. Not particularly easy to use first time around but I will get used to it, and no doubt they will tweak it if complaints flood in.

Why 'fix' it if it isn't broken. Google seems to change just to change even when though many of their tools are the standard everyone else is judge by. I don't see any improvement and liked it the previous way.

I do not like the Keyword Planner either. But, it not that hard to master. You click the first tab put in your keyword seed. Then you have to click from the "group" tab to the "Keyword" tab.

The problem I have is the Exact Match option. I am sure it's showing me the exact match numbers.

But in the long run It does not matter if it's showing me Broad or Exact Match numbers.

I ran across this other day which looks like a great tool for getting

I have longtail and all the rest, like that dog that sniffs ect. I love mine though, quick easy and simple for me to use, its not the most accurate but it works for me.

Now when I log in and I log in five, ten a hundred times a day it takes me to a page that looks like it is forcing me to do it. Keyword Planner and I don't have the link at top now that says go back.

Will we not be able to go back to the old style.
I also have it up on the Remote Desktop connection to the vps and I can still go back there but not on this ip.

Does anyone know a way to go back and stay there.

Now that you think of it MS was too reliant to google keyword tool then MS didn't have any good kw research help because of the update. I hope the developers of the tool will find solution on this.

Its funny how most warriors were stressed about Google's Keyword Tool removal, and now after a while, everyone will start to like the Keyword Planner even more than the old Keyword Tool.

I don't care about MS but they're probably working with a Google Adwords API, which could still be up & running considering the new keyword planner isn't much different as far as data.

Just because Google changed their own UI doesn't mean their database/API changed.

The Google Keyword Planner is ok, I still prefer the older version right now but may end up liking the new one in the future.

Instead of bashing it, you should be thanking the tool. It just did you a huge favor.

The old tool showed broad search results by default. It was a useless number. That is where your 40,000 searches were coming up.

The new tool shows exact search data only, which is what really matters when you are looking at search volume.

You screwed up. Not the tool.

Traffic Travis pulls its data from Google, so the data is not more accurate. It is identical. And if it is not identical, then TT is not pulling the right data, so I would be worried about that.

Thank you! I haven't had much time to check the new tool out, but the few times I did look at it, I was stumped on the exact match numbers. I'd go into the menu and change my criteria to exact and realize that the numbers didn't change and didn't have brackets. Just figured I was doing something wrong and haven't got around to figuring it out.

You just saved me the time!

Yeah, I was having that same problem.

Then I found this. It's listed under the second heading.

            https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/3141229

They only are showing exact match search volumes. If you change to broad or phrase, that only impacts the clicks and cost that are listed.

It will definitely be a good change for newbies using the tool for picking keywords to target for SEO campaigns. I think just about everyone made the mistake of looking at broad search numbers when they first got started.

This thread illustrates to me one of my greatest complaints with people who get into SEO these days. WAAAAAAY to many people get into it and even call themselves SEOs who have taken no time whatsoever to learn SEO.

The fact that almost all the tools out there pull from google is just basic stuff. Traffic Travis as Mike points out does the same. Where in the world do people expect to get better data of what searches are made at Google than Google? Its their data after all and no one else has direct access to it.

Everything else out there are guesstimates. Another search engines data might be useful but again nothing says the searches are the same (can't be given SEs like Bing get different traffic).

learn to use the new Keyword planner tool. whining about it is like arguing about having to pay taxes. I Never read anyone argue themselves out of having to pay it even though they waste time and effort claiming they shouldn't have to.

Finally learn the SEO industry. Google does not care a figs leaf about you getting good keyword research for organic ranking. they only provide it because of adword advertisers to give them some direction. Thats never been entirely accurate and it probably never will be.

I beg to differ. They may know the true numbers, but do they really provide it to us especially for advertising rates. In my experience, they greatly over-inflate the costs to be on the first page for keywords, hoping people will bid higher. I've seen ridiculous numbers for some keyword terms.

If they truly have a handle on all their metrics then they are lying to us. I think the issue is a little of both.

way and tried to extrapolate other data from what it was intended.
Nobody in their right mind would have ever taken what it gives and

I'm not saying Google always releases the right data. I am saying no one else has it to release.

I can look at 99 percent of the marketers sites here and I bet you they have adwords on them how much you want to bet.
I will bet that more people have shown me their sites over the years than you and no your 99% is greatly inflated. A good percentage - certainly higher than 1% - use affiliate marketing, others use CPA, a few sell links and banner space per impression and still another group here have their own products or company they sell products for. Second I said nothing about adsense. I said adwords. The keyword tool is designed by Google mostly to be used by adword advertisers

Besides all this, its a forum, if we can't release a little steam here then its not home.
blow all the steam you want my man but you will have to go right back to figuring out how to use the tool instead of complaining about something you will never change.

        new one said 12k/month

i ranked first place and i have days that i get 3 visitors through this keyword

Two things... In the old tool, you were probably looking at the broad search data, which is useless.

Second, are you sure you are ranked #1 and not just getting personalized results?

Are you sure you guys are not targeting keywords trending downward? There are some terms that get killer averages based on a surge that is dying out and then some that are averaged out over the year but really only get searches at certain times of the year.

but yeah going back for years the keyword tool has had the tendency to over report. Gets those adwords advertisers running more campaigns.

hm, this could be the case. I cannot imagine that you get just 3 visitors/day when you are at spot 1.

Use a different browser or a proxy and look again. However, I have to admit that the adwords tool indeed shows some (deliberatly?) false numbers. I also had a case where the tool showed (yes, exact match) 1 mil! per month, but when I was at position 3 I just got around 20-30 visitors per day, lol!

        So, be careful with it!

I also noticed another strange thing:

The tool showed me different results for the same keyword (yes, both time it was exact match) when I checked it at different days....

I had a feeling that the numbers were off as well.

I would look at the same keywords i had researched 8 months ago and the numbers are drastically different in a negative way. I think Google is up to something

Guys we can have a hundred threads about the keyword planner tool. Google is not going to change it because a bunch of marketers (who mostly do not even use adwords) complains about it. Its here to stay and no there is no one that is going to have more access search data at google than google.

The difference in number is due to the fact that keyword planner also includes mobile search by mobile phone and tablet users.

The CPC is much lower with keyword planner because this is the CPC you could see with traffic estimator, also a google tool. This means the CPC is now more accurate when you have adsense on your site. I have written a small post about this.

Just had a closer look at the tool.
The low searches is because the keywords are in exact match not broad match as before.
