Google's New Keyword Planner

As most of you know, Google's Keyword Planner is live and replacing the old Keyword Tool. I'm going to make this sticky, so that hopefully the daily keyword tool threads will stop popping up. Let's try to keep all conversations about the new tool in this thread.

Also, I would ask that you read this. This is from Google announcing that the Keyword Planner has replaced the Keyword Tool. It answers a lot of the questions people have been having about the Keyword Planner, especially about the search volume numbers you are seeing.

https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/3141229

Keyword Planner has replaced Keyword Tool

With Keyword Planner, we've combined the functionality of Keyword Tool and Traffic Estimator to make it easier to plan search campaigns. That's why Keyword Tool is no longer available. You can use Keyword Planner to find new keyword and ad group ideas, get performance estimates for them to find the bid and budget that are right for you, and then add them to your campaigns. We've also added several new features with Keyword Planner.

Note
The external Keyword Tool is also no longer available. If you want to get keyword ideas using Keyword Planner, make sure to sign in to your AdWords account.
As you start to use Keyword Planner, you'll likely notice some differences between Keyword Planner and Keyword Tool. Read on to learn more about what has changed.

No match type data for search volume

With Keyword Tool, we showed you broad match statistics by default with the ability to get data for other match types, like phrase and exact match. But with Keyword Planner, you'll get historical statistics only for exact match. To decide what match type to use, add the keyword idea to your plan and review the traffic estimates for each match type. This change will help you get an accurate estimate of how much traffic you can expect to get with different match types. There's quite a bit of overlap between broad and phrase match keywords, and the search volume statistic in Keyword Tool didn't take that overlap into account. Traffic estimates like click and cost do take this overlap into account, so checking those can help you decide which match type to use.

For example, let's say your keyword is dark chocolate. If you want to check that keyword's average monthly searches, we'll show you the same stats whether you use a broad, phrase, or exact match type with dark chocolate. Traffic estimates like clicks and cost, on the other hand, do take into account keyword match types. For example, if you get estimates for a list of broad match keywords, we'll take into account any overlap between those keywords.

No device targeting

Keyword Planner doesn't let you specifically target mobile devices, like tablets and mobile phones. By default, it targets all devices, which is in line with recent changes made to AdWords campaigns. We're working on a feature that'll allow you to get traffic estimates by device type and set bid adjustments for mobile devices.

Note
In general, you'll notice that the average search volume data is higher in Keyword Planner as compared to the exact match search volume data you got with Keyword Tool. That's because we'll show you the average number of searches for a keyword idea on all devices (desktop and laptop computers, tablets, and mobile phones). With Keyword Tool, we showed you average search volume for desktop and laptop computers by default.
Other changes in the data columns

In Keyword Planner, you'll notice several different data columns than those that you were used to seeing in Keyword Tool. Here are the differences:

Local monthly searches and global monthly searches: These two columns have been replaced by the "Average monthly searches" column, simplifying the search volume data you can get. The average monthly search volume is specific to your targeting settings, and you can get data for an entire country or individual cities and regions within a country. Note that you can still get global monthly search data by targeting all locations.
Ad share: This column is being replaced with a new column called ad impression share to help you look for potential impressions.
Google Search Network: This column has been replaced by the network option within the targeting settings. To get data for the entire Search Network, select the "Google and search partners" targeting option.
Search share: This column has been retired.
Approx. CPC (Search): This column has been replaced by the "Avg. CPC" column. You'll get more accurate data in the average cost-per-click column than you did in the approximate cost-per-click column.
Local search trends: This column doesn't appear in the Keyword Planner interface. However, you can still get search volume trends by hovering over the icon in the "Avg. monthly searches" column. You can also see these trends segmented by month when you download your historical statistics from Keyword Planner.
Extracted from webpage: This column has been removed from the Keyword Planner interface. However, you can still get the webpage the keyword idea came from when you download your historical statistics from Keyword Planner. Note that you'll only get this data when you search for keyword and ad group ideas based on a URL, like a webpage on your website.

I've been taking a looksee at it, it seems really confusing.
When I search "marketing" none of the searches bring up more than a few hundred search results in a month's time and I think I might have been searching on broad even.

I have been watching videos on how to use Google Keyword Planner and I'm sort of getting it sort of. It's like I can get lists of keywords but it's very sloppy and I only get vague guesses as to how much people are searching for these words.

Anyone have a favorite tutorial or know of some great alternatives to Google keyword planner?

I found something called word stream, which looks really good but you have to pay a lot for it, like $300 a month minimum. At that annual pricing you would be better spending it on odesk to hire a programmer to create a clone of keyword tool and charge less than 10% of what they are charging or even make a small fortune on advertising for advertisers that want to promote on your own keyword tool.

I'm kind of ranting but here are some questions for warriors as well as some suggestions for someone who might like to be the first person to capitalize off of this.

You should check the targeting you are looking at. I would bet you have it set to a really limited region. I checked "marketing" and in the United States it gets 60,500 searches. Worldwide, it gets 550,000 searches.

Also, in the new tool, it ONLY shows exact searches. There is no broad or phrase data anymore. They were useless metrics anyhow. It will change the CPC numbers if you switch to phrase and broad, but not search volume.

I apologize if this has been asked before. I'm unable to see the "exact" search number in Google keyword planner.

I called Google and they told me you couldn't see it at the moment. I called them twice.

I'm not interested in the approximate number of clicks based on my highest bid (they kept telling me to use that feature) since I am working on an SEO campaign, not PPC.

It's over here, but as Mike F has already said: google keyword planner is only showing exact search terms.

There is no problem. The new tool only shows exact match search volumes. No more broad and phrase match which were useless anyhow.

Keyword planner's system is very different from the keyword tool. The planner pulls the data with the default of exact match. That is what you see in the keyword ideas view.

When you go to save the data, it saves by default as broad for when you download the keywords.

When you change the type, by clicking on the pencil, you only change the type for the saved keywords that you add to your "plan". And then only when you download the keywords.

See the attached pop up jpg.

So the view won't change when you toggle from one to the other, only the statistics of the keywords in you plan when you download them.

Not very user friendly nor very useful, but once you understand it, you can get more out of it.

Normally there was a tick box under the search input field to get results close related to the phrase we type in, so when I type:

      - best hair dryer

I would get a list like:

      - best hair dryer for thick hair
      - best professional hair dryer
      - etc

Now I get a list of poor related keywords, is there a way around it?

Unsure if I am using it correctly, but I set it to United States or worldwide and then typed in 'weight loss' and only saw 4 results returned.
The previous tool would have brought back hundreds of keywords.

So, the new Google Keyword Planner is a bit 'different' than the old Google Keyword tool and it sure does take some getting used to.

The first, and so far only (knock on wood) problem I had was figuring out how to export a list of 'chosen' keywords and their search volume, to a spreadsheet.

It took me two days to figure it out, and once I did, I saw a whole bunch of posts on my social media accounts about other people struggling with the exact same problem.

So I made a video showing what I figured out... this might be a 'long way around,' but so far, it's the only path I've found (if anyone has a shortcut though, I would LOVE to hear it)... hopefully this might help.

    Dani

P.S. Not sure what I did wrong here. I thought all I had to do was post the link and the video would automatically be embedded in the post. Anyone?

I know that at 7 minutes, it seems kind of a long process, but I think once you get the hang of it, it will go faster, and I'll say this, it is more thorough than the old Keyword tool and makes it a lot easier to drill down into the niche too.

        Danielle,
You can do this much faster and you can download from the Keyword ideas tab.

Some may not be aware of where to choose your match type so I'll start there.

After you have typed in your seed keyword and have chosen your match type, you can go through the list and choose related keywords that you're interested in by following the example in the screenshot below.

Now you will want to download your keywords to an excel spreadsheet and a lot of people miss this function because Google's send feedback tab gets in the way.

After you have clicked on that arrow, you will see a window that gives a few options and you will want to click on Excel CSV file format as shown below.

        Hope this helps.

Hello guys i think keyword tool was good but...if you are using keyword tool for last day when google replace it with keyword planner, you will see lots of changes in results.

Keyword planner is much more friendlier than key tool. And it is freshly updated with user query. Thats why i will give keyword planner A+ rating.

Neatly done by Google. Gives you the stats that actually matter to you - exact stats.

Another way of looking at this baby (amazing opprtunities!):
-try not inserting any keywords and put your LP URL there. (if u don't have one yourself put the product URL or the URL of a good competitor or relevant website you identified).
    - gives you exact relevant keyword groups based on the content of your page
    - once you went over them and sorted the relevant ones for u, pure brilliance remanis

Most 3rd party keyword software that has anything to do with Google SERPs is pulling their keyword data from the Google Adwords API. So 3rd party software is most likely the same data or possibly even outdated Google data.

I compared exact searches i did prior to the new Planner to the current new keyword planner. The numbers are now higher for almost all keywords. So if you want exact match you'll have to estimate.

After running a keyword in planner i would say the exact match is about 20%-30% less.

The Keyword Planner does not separate the searches out by device type like the old Keyword Tool did. That is why you are seeing higher numbers. Mobile searches, tablet searches, etc. are all together.

Sounds like a future update will give users the option to select the device type though.

Google keyword planners is showing monthly searches for exact match by default.
it was pretty much a merge of the Keyword Tool and the Traffic Estimator and simply combined the two within a new interface.

Google Data center is still updating search volumes.

Read the first post in this thread. The new tool will adjust CPC and expected clicks based on the match data you choose. However, it ONLY shows exact match search volume no matter what you select.

Broad and phrase match search volumes were useless anyhow, so it is a good thing. People new to the tool would always get confused by the search volume, and didn't know they had to choose exact match.

Am I just more blind than I was a week ago? I went to the eye doctor last week ad he told me my vision has not changed enough to warrant spending money on new glasses. But I have insurance, so it only costs me $10 for a new set of glasses. but I cant find the setting button to change from broad to exact any more. Did they take it away, or am I just missing it?

I just can't figure Google out, they keep mucking with good stuff, and trying to change the search function to keep us hopping. Just when you think you got something figured, they change it.

The button is there, but the new tool only shows exact match search volume. It will show broad and phrase match for the other data, but for search volume it is always exact match now.

I read through this entire thread but I didn't see anything about CPC on the content network vs the search network. Has anyone figured out how to find the real cost per click for ads that show on the content network?

The (now gone) Contextual Tool provided the CPC for the Content Network and I knew to expect about 68% of that amount. Is this information available anywhere in the new system?

Google's keyword planner is different from Google keyword tool, it can't show us all results as the previous tools show, previous tool show us local and monthly searches in differnet-2 columns but new tool show only avg monthly searches only. One other main thing about it is this tool show only exact type of keywords. so i don't like it previous tool is better than it.

Gold Dust - Those will not change the search volume numbers shown in the keyword planner. It will still only show the exact match.

The three options you see there are for how it gets applied to your paid advertising only.

    This is the difference:

Just enter the location name on the box provided in KP. After that you will get the result according to your location.

The tool provides all the other data for exact, phrase, and broad. For search volume, it ONLY provides exact match searches, which is a great upgrade. People used to get confused and think they found some great keyword, only to find out later that they were targeting a broad match term.

When using the keyword planer tool to research keywords, should I select Google or Google and search partners. I am interested in keyword search volume and I get wildly different numbers depending on which one of these I select.

For one keyword, I get 590 searches with just Google selected, but I get
135,000 with Google and search partners selected. I don't know which of these is real.

When people go to Google to do a search, are they automatically searching just Google, or Google and their search partners?

    Thanks

Is there any reason why I would want to exclude Google's search partners? If they are searching my keyword, I think I would like to know about it. I don't understand why anyone would not want to see those numbers in their search.

Looks like it's broken. When I upload a file with 10,000 keywords it only displays the results for 800 keywords. Why even let upload so many keywords when it actually only analyses 800?
It was working fine until today. So I hope it's a temporary bug. If they do this on purpose it's rather frustrating. I tried 3 different Adwords accounts and 3 browsers. Still get the same results, just 800 keywords instead of 10,000.
