Recent drop in ranking..remedy? I think I know.

Hello

For years we were #5/7 for our major keyword, then quite a few months ago we dropped a few places, and now I see we have dropped off page 1.

Our major keyword is a general catch all keyword that I just feel we ought to rank highly for, fortunately all our money making keywords are doing fine.

I have only been doing SEO for about 5 years, I had to learn everything from scratch. Regarding back links, I did what everyone was doing, articles, forum sig's etc etc.

I think we have been penalised for having a lot of, what are now considered, crappy backlinks.

I checked the page rank of all the sites who rank 1 -5 on google for our keyword, I thought they would rank higher than us, in fact we were ranked exactly the same...so that points again at backlinks doesn't it?

I guess all I can do is try to get quality links, but in my niche that's not easy, none of my competitors will carry my advertising, any more than I would theirs.

Thoughts welcome.

Richard

So you did not hear about the Penguin update from last year until now?

Sure I heard about the penquin update, and made some changes to our site based on advice gained here, I thought they had had some effect, as we bounced up and down for a month or two.

But recently, in the last few weeks, we dropped about 7 places.

So is this all down to back link quality?

If that was not what Penguin was about then what else?

So, you checked the PR of the sites before you and wonder its not better as yours?

And then you claim to know about SEO?

    There is your Problem, boy.

Simply read about what the page rank REALLY means and why it has nothing to do with the ranking of the the site itself.

    That would be a start.

It's all about the backlinks, high pr backlinks and high quality and frequently updated content on your site. Now you can't ignore the quality of your site. If you give value to the content then google will give value to your site.

      Thanks for the useful comment.

As for dcary13...boy! I am very probably old enough to be your grandfather, which may be part of the problem. Didn't your Mama ever tell you..."If you cant say something nice..keep your mouth shut.

Don't worry there's always people trying to deceive instead of helping...

I would say that you should get rid of those links and start building real links. As I can see you have done SEO for 5 years - this is a damn long period of time. I'm sure you can come up with better links that forum sigs and articles which were popular pre penguin.

The first step should be starting contacting with webmasters/partners/friends in your niche. Send them kind e-mails and say that you have this site and why you should think that their readers should be interested in that.
