I've not had any adsense websites tank. However one of my amazon affiliate sites has dropped off the face of the earth.

7 first page rankings and just disappeared. No other sites have been touched though.

2 months old site as well. and it wasn't just crap content either. Had 75 indexed pages. (this wasn't your usual kind of amazon affiliate review site)

yup here in europe too. My wp blog site seems to be deindexed all together, my old html site (same domain) is still in the SERP.. I am clueless..

Yukon:
Do you purposely keep the txt on your pages to a minimum, so it is easier for you to make more internal links with related txt that, could be part of say, a 1000 word article on a page? This way, you are breaking up one 1000 word article, into one short paragraph of txt with 100 words plus ten internal linked additional internal pages.

I do keep my on-page text to a min. I don't have a need for an article, let alone a 1,000 word article, that's just not the nature of the niche.

If I was into articles I would break the articles up into smaller chunks of info. (very focused) to squeeze more internal links out of the same content & to keep my traffic from dosing off, lol.

The site howstuffworks had a decent example of breaking content up into very focused pages, not sure why they changed things about this article because the old style was solid IMO. It's very easy to create 100% relevant internal links with a single subject spread out over multiple internal pages & still be user friendly.

That series of pages for that one article is basically a silo. It could use some tweaks but it's still solid for SEO & easy to navigate.

Build a few more articles that were all setup as a series of internal pages & you could own a niche like weather (example).

Example of article series (site structure):

Weather (index page)
- Hurricanes (category)
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - etc...
- Hail Storms (category)
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - etc...

  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - etc...
- Blizzards (category)
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - Supporting page
  - etc...
- Floods (category)

  - Supporting page
  - etc...

For an Ecommerce site where you have the category then separate pages for different types of product in that category would you link each product page back to main category page.

If your talking about nesting categories/pages deeper than one category, really that's up to you which category, sub-category page you want to throw all the supporting pages at (internal links).

I usually don't go more than one category deep on my own sites.

I have around 60 products based around Pest control, so would the best practice be to link back to main category page and not the Pest control (index page)

I forgot to mention breadcrumbs, you could pass authority back to both a category & sub-category at the same time If you wanted, just depends on what you want to do & what makes sense for traffic.

You could do this as breadcrumb nav. links

Home > Category > Sub-category > Product page

...or this.

Home > Category > Sub-category > Product page

Yes, I noticed some traffic loss but this has been happening since August 21. I had my sites going up and down since then though the general trend has been down. In the SERPS all I have noticed is that in my niche they are dominated by the big guys. The big guys are always there the difference is that this time they have 2-3 listings per keyword. So my site was pushed back to the second page for some high volume keywords because the same big websites are there but now they take up two or three places.

This, along with what Cutts tweeted asking about small sites makes me wonder if they have again bumped up the big authority websites.

With a table of contents a visitor can go to and read the specific page of content they want with one click.

Without a table of contents a visitor has to read and click through every page trying to find the specific page of content they are looking for.

Being less user friendly results in more time on the site, more pages (also less bounce) and more page views.

IMHO you can tell which sites are more interested in Google and technical metrics than their readers because they use this tactic to chunk an article across many different pages.

The site could, after all, have the entire article on one page and, like Wikipedia, use a table of contents using bookmarks to help the reader navigate one long page.

Wikipedia does indeed break up articles.

What they do is turn just about every one of their articles into a bunch of short summaries, combine all those summaries to form a complete article, then link out of those articles too more focused subtopic articles & repeat... over & over...

Notice how Wikipedia articles usually have an internal link pointing to a more detailed article below each <h2> tag (screenshot below), the location on the page that the jump-links at the top of the article jump to on the article page.

There's more than just basic articles on Wikipedia, it's a boat load of relevant internal pages passing authority back & forth between pages. It's not just one article ranking in Google SERPs all by it's lonesome.

I have noticed that my websites that have been created within the past 2 months that were ranking on pages 4-8 for about 5-7 keywords each have all dropped off.

I thought it was a Google dance but it seems that new domains are carrying less weight in this recent algo update?

Traffic has been dropping consistently for me too. Sometimes it's been rather sporadic. I have been getting some good traffic, not from search engines, but from blog comments and answer sites.

I think its about Google Dance. If recently increased your effort in SEO, in huge volume, definitely its Google Dance. Your site's rank will be back after they finish calculating your position and it might improve your rank. But don't hope too much, it's just my opinion.

I've lost more than 90% of visitors since last week. I've being doing some changes to websites, but it shouldn't impact that much, it's due to Google update.
