I have recently launched E-commerce websites, and discovered that it's crawler takes note of about 2500 pages which it thinks are duplicated. I have now started to completely rewrite every description of every product so that this number may be reduced. Since this is the biggest issue I am wondering what the effect of fixing it will be on our position in the SERP mainly Google. Does anybody have some stories or experience about this topic?

A client of mine has an e-commerce site which ran into Panda problems due to duplicated product listings when Panda first came out.

It took well over a year to fix the problem by re-writing thousands of product listings, and making the customer reviews easier to submit to add unique content.

Don't be too stressed out in this matter. Duplicate content is RARELY a penalty unless you do it to manipulate rankings.

Product pages are the most common types of duplicate pages/contents in the web. And there's nothing to worry about that.

Take a look at this one.

Depends on how fast your pages get crawled again, which depends on your niche and your domain trust as well.
In a highly competitive space, you will see less "drastic" jumps but you'll still be able to see it. Be sure to add great unique content on your category pages.

You need to 301 redirect the duplicate pages to the original content page. I have worked with many businesses that had many duplicate content issues. Once I fixed the issue organic traffic increased.
