Do dubble (--) have any bad effect on SEO, in the URL?

Hey all

I have a website infront of me, some of the URL's are like this:

website.com/blue--socks <- Is that bad for SEO?

Then i do a normal "site:" search, i cant find the URL. But if a do a normal search, on the keyword, it is indexed.

Anyone know if it is bad?

  • I wouldn't say its bad .. but why would anyone want to put -- and not just - ?

    Hyphens as a keyword separator is acceptable in Google's eyes. But it doesn't benefit for anything
  • Not for SEO directly I think.

    For traffic it may be, not 100% sure if it is bad, but often a complicated URL might get double encoded when it goes into social media websites, stumbleupon is one that sticks in my mind, but it is not the only one, I just can't remember the others offhand...Twitter might do it also. Also some forums might not like it.

    Try submitting one with a double hyphen into SU and see if the link works.

    Looks like the URL of this thread has just ignored your (--)

    • You don't know shit about SEO. Just doing that gives you page 1 with no linking and a personal tweet from Matt Cutts.

  • Not bad as some sites use the '-' as separator of the values (like in query string, key value pair) and any optional missing value can lead to have multiple dashes in the dynamically generated urls.
  • It is one of my customers, who has an old website with (--)

    If i make a "site:" - it cannot find the page with (--)
    If i make a normal search, it has indexed the URL with the (--)

    That is why i am asking

      That's just a horrible way of creating URLs (--). Problem is If you want to fix the old URLs (--) you'll have to make sure the 301 redirects are perfect across the entire site.

      Big headache IMO.
  • According to me hyphen is not affected in seo but you should have good contentns on your site and you will be able to get top ranking in the search engine
