Newbie Alert - quick question

Hi everyone. I am very new here and new to SEO as well so I do apologise for stupid questions I post over the next few weeks.

I am starting a small business, I do not have a budget to spend on SEO so I am attempting it myself, now I realise a lot of people will have just switched off but here goes.

I have registered a domain / company that is not a popular name - any google search on my company name puts me at number 1 (most of the time).

I have selected and added three word Meta tags that are not common - but I can't rank at all on any search engine with them.

I added backlinks to a few sites, I then checked and had nine live backlinks to sites like Facebook, Twitter a forum and here etc. Two days later I searched and my check showed no backlinks and never has again.

Can anyone give me some idea where I am going wrong ? I understand I need to build quality backlinks manually and that will take time - but why did mine disappear ? I've selected relevant Metatags but a key word search doesn't place me anywhere at all - have I not entered the tags right or have I made a different mistake ?

Any advice is gratefully received.

    Number 1 rule. Have patience!

    Ranking a new site doesn't happen overnight. It can take months (depending on the keywords you are ranking for, the competition and the backlinks you are building).

    What type of search are you doing to check your backlinks? Keep in mind that there is no tool in existence that will show you all your backlinks.

    Are for meta tags, which particular ones are you using? Hopefully not the useless meta keywords.

    Starting a new business and expecting 'SEO' to get you clients is a bad idea these days. Are you sure you can't swing some advertising? Even $5 or $10 per day would get you started.

    Hi guys thanks for the reply.

    UMS - thanks for the info, I expected it to take a while, but I did think if the keywords were not popular then after Google had indexed the site then I might start appearing in the rankings - somewhere, anywhere ! I have tried several backlink checkers like Small SEO tools and some other free online ones. I am a bit unclear about your comment on meta tags can you please elaborate ?

    Performance Man, valid comment you make and in time I think I will probably be paying for targeted advertising - although I am still not fully convinced on the benefits. In the early stages there are too many competing demands on the cash flow. The business is very specialised, until I can get traffic to the site I won't know if that is converting to customers or not.

    Does anyone know why my signature appears in preview and then disappears after posting ?
