Best way of examining keyword competition these days

Since I haven't been targeting new keywords for a while now I was wondering if there are any new tools or updated methods of checking the competition.

Just want to go after some nice easy keywords for once

    Old fashion way always works .

    In a nutshell:

    Use Google planner to see what kind of search volume and competition you have for a keyword.

    Find a keyword and search it in Google. Identify sites that indicate any SEO in the top results i.e. Exact match in titles, keyword in description , keyword in url

    Search those url's in majesticseo.com and see if they have strong backlinks, citation and trust flow.

    If they don't or if they do and you think you can beat them easily... go for it.
