Poor Google optimization

When I type in "mysite.com:" into Google, my web pages that were indexed obviously appear. However, when I copy and paste a page title or meta description chosen at random, I rarely get any hits, even after checking all of the search engine page results.

Yahoo and Bing are quite the opposite; my meta content is very well searchable.

I hooked up this site with Google webmaster tools two weeks ago. Should I just be patient? After Google crawls my sitemap and "indexes" the pages, does it improve its optimization later?

I must add that I am abiding by Google's quality guidelines and have not had any manual actions although I do fear some algorithmic action that I can't pinpoint, or I'm just being impatient as this site is very new.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Google is about 10 years ahead of Yahoo & Bing on their search algo. Yahoo & Bing can still be gamed with keyword stuffing & spammy links.

    Google doesn't put any weight on meta description tags, though they will show the on-page text they're focusing on per keyword search inside the SERP description If you don't include a meta description tag in your pages HTML (Wikipedia does this (no meta description tags)).

    Is that colon a typo ("mysite.com")?

    Patience could be part of it however it may be the way you were looking for answers. For instance did you use quotation marks around the phrases you searched for? Just typing in your exact title tag isn’t going to return your site. Is your website relatively new?

    I would also check into using a third party program to measure your rankings in search. Using Google to see where you fall is notoriously unreliable. There are many factors like search history, whether or not you are logged into a Google account, your location and probably a dozen other factors that will skew your interpretation of how you are doing.

    • Thanks Shawn. You know, I totally forgot about using quotes to bring up exact search results. It now appears that all of my pages are being listed but are just way deep in the "other" search results, leading me to believe they weren't listed at all. I think I am expecting too much too soon as my site is only about a month old.

      Everything makes sense now though; I had forgotten how much work I had put into my other website to get good SEO so now I just have to do it again.
