SEO and Domains That Have Been Forwarded

I hope someone can help me with this! I'm doing some offline consulting and know about the power of the domain name to rank well. So, I found some really easy terms to rank for and had a client buy the domain names since they were available (all .com)

for example
bluewidgets.com
gets forwarded to allwidgets.com

I then forwarded all those keyword rich domain names to their main site (allwidgets.com) through Godaddy's forward feature, and did not mask the domain.

I have then been doing some backlinks for the domain (bluewidgets.com) with keyword rich anchor text but they are still nowhere to be found in the search engines nor do any of the links show up in Google or Yahoo.

Can I get a forwarded domain name ranked? Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

(PS I've gotten domains ranked #1 in Google, so I know the basics of SEO, I'm just having trouble with these forwarded ones) Thank You :-)

My guess is forwarding them was not a good idea.
I could be wrong (yet again) but I heard that forwarding
is not even something in the mix. Probably should have kept
it active, with a link to the new site. I get quite a lot of
traffic from un-updated urls that have been around for ages,
but not updated. I just put up a big link on top saying this
site is now at such and such. But even that may get
a litle slap from google. But, I still get quite a bit of
traffic to those urls and the content stays. If anyone
wants to know what these urls are, exactly, they are
pert of the free websites that were so popular 10 years
ago with your web access accounts. My were and still
are on earthlink. Spent quite a few years just doing
the free site thing, then decided on my own domains.

In short, I would have kept those so called keyword
rich domains active. However, I am sure the real expert
    will answer shortly.

Thanks Paul! The keyword rich domains were all new domains. I kept their main site on the existing domain since it was from 2002.

So, as far as you understand, forwarded domains have no seo value?

I can still go in and change these sites - I have access to them and they are open to anything (I was clear with them that this was the first time I'd tried forwarding domains, so they understand it's kind of a test) They just don't want to do a lot of upkeep on the different sites.

Any ideas from you (or others) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
