why do people build new pages on sites to create a backlink to their money sites? this doesnt give them any juice even if the domain is a pr 5 etc

the backlink has to be on the page with the pr,

am i missing something?

  • The domain does not have PR. A web page does. In that case, the index page.
If the link was the only link on that PR5 index page, theoretically it would
get the full PR5 juice. PR is a factor in rankings, but not the end all. But some
people love to raise their PR. That's not a bad thing.

  • Andrewsfm,

Keep in mind that people also build links because they want actual people to follow them and not just get PR benefit.

  • A backlink is important to increase your rankings and just like Paul said, a PR is one factor to compute a rank in SEs. But again, this is just one factor. You will also need to consider good content when doing backlinks. It's best to also attract direct visits by producing good and useful content to your readers. That is how you build traffic and convert sales in time.
  • One reason could be as the links from relevant sites can increase the authority as well as the popularity of a site (backlink) which in turn may help in increasing the SERPs and the direct traffic you get from those links.

    • I have to agree....

People want to traffic and post there to get people to follow the link. If you always consider if this link will get me juice I think you are missing a trick.

I often put stuff out there and see what kind of traffic I get and then try and repeat what works. You sometimes find that you will get traffic from the most unlikely of places and from somewhere with our PR.
  • Also, the way that PR flows (in theory) is to subtract 2. So if a PR 5 main domain page links to a new post, technically that page is now a PR 3. And say that PR 3 page links to a new page now giving it a PR of 1. The PR you see on the toolbar also is not the true PR, so keep that in mind as well.

    • That theory is completely wrong.

  • In addition, a number of SEOs believe that PR is now dead. Google hasn't updated it in a long time.

As long as the backlink isn't from a site that Google considers spammy, any link is good. The page that has "no value" now, could eventually have a lot of value in a few months or a couple of years.

Nowadays, the content around the backlink seems to be more important, especially if the site as a whole provides "valuable content" to its readers.

    The long term....
  • Yeah you don't get the same amount of link juice as posting a link right on the home page, but the new page definitely has some trust from the root (both because the root usually links to it and just because the page is ON the site that has trust). I've heard people say that you lose about 1/3 the link juice through each buffer. Not sure if that's true but it sounds about right from what I've seen.
