A little blog tip to help your rankings

Hey all

I just thought I'd share this little tip about wordpress sites if you have a blog and want a neat search engine friendly title for your posts.

I did notice some more organic traffic from Googly once I done this to my site, and 2 page one rankings for a few search terms.
  • In wordpress dashboard go to settings > permalinks
  • You'll see a custom structure radio button in the common settings area, click on this, and put the code in the box as follows after your domain name: /%category%/%postname%/
  • Save changes
After you do this any time you create a post and put it in a category you will get a much better URL for each of your posts and putting you in a better position in the rankings.

such as:

http://yoursite.com/category/post-heading

instead of:

http://yoursite.com/?p=123

And will help people find your site easier as their search will match closer to your title !

[end of simple but very useful tip]

Yup - getting that keyword in the title and in the post url is critically important for on page optimization!

I would think (or at least I would hope) that most people would know this by now. Thats pretty much the first think you should do when you are getting the site ready.

Ya no doubt - however I'm sure if it finds 1 person who didn't know then I'd say it's worth the post, there's so many things we all take for granted cause we've been in the game for so long where others may just of jumped in! 6 Years ago? That would of been news to me

Even better is to use the WP No Category Base plugin, that way you can remove the word category from the default URL.

    Example:
    • Before: hxxp://cars.com/category/ford/mustang
    • After: hxxp://cars.com/ford/mustang

One think I'm concerning is that a category name in the URL may create trouble (as broken link) in case you decided to change the category of a post and this is a common task.

That will happen for any URL on the net.

Get it right the first time or do a 301 redirect when all else fails.

The url is not the title.

That does not help with google. This is 2013, and they look at other
signals, not the url. Ever see a youtube url? Amazon url?

It does help people who are on your site perhaps know what the
        page may be about.

It won't do much, if anything, to help your rankings.

Paul, I think you are forgetting that with those massive authority sites, many other signals come into play that having ugly URLs doesn't affect them negatively. They can afford to do that. But if you are a small site, you have a much better chance at ranking by getting as many things right as you can.

You can't compare those big sites with small sites most people here own. Big sites have lots of other signals to rely on for ranking, so comparing them with average joe's site just doesn't make sense.

I am not so sure the keywords in the URL make any real difference. I always just use %postname% because using the category in the post name makes things too difficult to change in the future. What if you want to reorganize things? Anything you did to build links will be lost if you change the URL.

If there is any value in having keywords in the URL, you should be able to get it from the postname.

I would just use post name and leave the category out altogether, but I guess it really depends on the structure of your site and what you are trying to achieve. Totally agree with having the keywords in the url as possible though for SEO purposes.

No probs glad to have helped. So many people jump past the basics on their quest to make cash.

Take the point about using category, it could cause problems if you are still playing about with design, look and feel, but if you put up a good category name I don't see any reason to change it, and is a good thing I think to have as many keywords in the URL for the post.
