Penguin recovery with 301 redirect?

I created my site a year ago and bought fiverr links with about 10-20 web 2.0 tier 1 links and wiki / bookmark links for tier 2. Most of the tier 2 links were deleted. I did not build any additional backlinks. Then I noticed my site got hit during the penguin or panda update. I am not sure whether that was because of a penalty or depreciation of the backlinks.

Fast forward to today, I am starting to build quality links but I am not seeing any improvements in ranks. I am not sure whether my site is sandboxed or my site is penalized from the 10-20 links.

I now have about 200 quality backlinks and I disavowed /deleted the old fiverr links. I now have about 10 active fiverr links.

Now, I am in the process of creating a new domain. I now have some legit links but I am worried that my old site was penalized from the 10 fiverr links and the penalty will pass forward. Should I do a 301 redirect or should I make a landing page with a do-follow or no-follow link?

If you were hit by Penguin, I would recommend against redirecting as penalties transfer. You could try (if you really want, but I don't recommend it) redirect pages/URLs which don't have any toxic backlinks.

That said, are you sure you were hit by Penguin and not Panda? I think the numbers of links you are talking about seem too low to cause a Penguin penalty.

Don't redirect, I am almost certain from my attempts that this just passes on the penalty from the bad links too - it's like telling Google it's the same site. I have a couple of sites I wouldn't mind recovering, but I am now going recreate them on totally new domains with no redirection from the old, do only quality SEO from day one and see where it goes.

I am not too sure because I have lost the statistics on the serp. But I am certain during one of those updates, I saw a drop in serp.

Right now my keyword shows up in .ca but not .com searches.

Would a splash page + follow link pass link juice but no penalty? In addition, would the rule of no linking amongst ourselves apply? Like Domain A to Domain B?

Use the Panguin tool to find out which algo update hit your site. Even when you use the Disavow tool it can take a long time to show the effect. So I would ask you to wait

I have had success with redirecting all pages except the home page. I then build a handful of quality links to the home page of the new domain.

This sounds like a good idea. I think I shall adopt your strategy, although it will take forever to redirect close to 200 pages !!! I have bad links pointing to my homepage.

Agree with the others, the 301 trick won't work on Penguin.

redirecting to a new site from old penalized site simply means you are inviting google to treat your new site the same way they treated the old one.

Agreed, what is it you want to pass on, anyway? If crappy links damaged your site, which you are assuming, why do you want to forward it to the new? If you are still ranking for something and want to preserve that traffic, well,I don't think you can have your cake and eat it.

I was using serpfox to track my serp. But the data was recently deleted. I didn't have g analytics during the time of the hit. which i assume the panguin tool will need.

Most of my links are to the root, so I don't think there would be any value 301 from my inner pages.

Do you know of any free tool that can check if the site has been hit by panda / penguin that doesn't require g analytics?

Kill it and start a new site.

DO NOT use 301 redirects. You're just pushing crap over to the new site.

    Been there, done that.

Oh, and STOP buying crappy links.

I have existing traffic to the old site. Would a follow link on a splash page pass on the penalty or would I need to do a no-follow link?

Avoid redirection when you have penalty on your domain. Create a new domain and transfer your content into new domain and build quality back links as you have only 10 quality links for old domain. Add no-index and no-follow tag on your old domain also remove the content on where you posted.

    301 redirect won't work.

Your only option is to remove the links and then disavow those you cannot get removed. The links are the issue here.

If you aren't gonna clean up your links and throw away the domain, why not just give it to me? I can fix it myself and I love older link equity. Most people will tell you to move on, I'll tell you to fix it. If not I'll accept the domain.

I tried the 301 redirect. I work initially for a week or two then the it's back to square one.

No point wasting the time for the 301 recovery. It doesn't work in the long run
