Accept Comments?

Hey there. Would there be any negative repercussions from approving comments with websites on your blog? Obviously the ones that make no sense can be trashed, but the comments that are actually relevant and its clear they have read the post, i feel reluctant to approve them because it will take away page rank from my page.

Is it okay to have a few comments on your blog?

  • Remove the link and approve them that way.
  • Most of the comments are in no-follow anyway, especially in WordPress.

    I do accept comments, but only those that are without keywords, without link etc. So basically comments from real folks not from some "seo gurus"

    • Even though they are nofollow, they still bleed out pagerank though. That's why I never allow links in comments on a site.

    As much as I don't like Facebook, maybe use the FB iframe code snippet for comments on your web page, that way none of the comment text/links will ever show up on your Google Cache (text version) which will most likely never be seen by Googlebot. Traffic will still see the comments/links.

    • Just be mindful that by doing this you don't "own" the comments. FB does. This means if ever you change platforms or decide to remove FB comments, you lose everything.

      And AFAIK FB comments ARE crawled and indexed.

    • Keep them away from google. Google has said time and again that
      comments add nothing. So, if you are relying on google, don't
      accept comments. It mucks up your page content, and BTW, is
      borderline adsense TOS violation. People bid on your site, not
      the comments. That's why in most cases it is a violation.

      Google is rapidly getting to the point where comments are just spam
      and are on spam pages. This has nothing to do with yahoo, huff post,
      etc. that allow member's comments. Those are a different animal.

      intensedebate is also a good way of allowing visitors to add
      comments and links, with no content showing. But again, just
      because it's "hidden," does not mean it's not there.

  • You can decide to leave no comment at all, no obligation, you call the shot.

    Besides, you can make your comment no follow and approve anyone you feel are worthwhile to you.

  • I never approve comments with keywords or links in them, looks spammy to me and I don't want google to take some action.
