Finding the true number of quote results in SERPS

Hey everyone.

When doing KW research in Google, sometimes my "in quotes" search apparently yields more results than the broad search, or less but still a huge number.

Example:
diy holiday decorations - broad - 3 million
"diy holiday decorations" - in quotes - 170,000

Further investigation on the "in quotes" SERPs reveals that the listings stop after say 100 or 200 results.

In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 176 already displayed.
I'm wondering, is there a quicker way to find where the results end?

More importantly, do you see this as a sign of poor competition? Surely if only 176 results are being displayed, there is a better chance of getting ranked, assuming one creates some useful, original content.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Your competition is the page ranked #1 in Google SERPs. The page ranked #784 doesn't matter.

      My experience has been different.

While getting the top spot is awesome, I still get plenty of worthwhile traffic on my sites for KWs where I place much lower.

I realize that the amount of competing pages isn't the full picture, but only part of it, in terms of competition.

Competition quantity, as well as quality is still worth taking into consideration when targeting long tail keywords.
