Hi folks,

I have the choice of a .info or .org domain, all others are taken. I have already bought the .info only because it was $0.99 lol but was wondering what would be better to SEO and SERPs. The domain is 7 characters long and contains the exact keyword of the product.

Thanks for any advice.

    • If you do get both, have your site on the .org and 301 redirect the .info to it

  • .org by a mile? huh? it doesn't matter what extension you get, they all hold the same value.

    • no way. As far as resale goes, .com is far and away the most superior product. I wouldnt use anything other than a .com.

      Stay away from everything else...

  • I'm not gonna argue with you loz but if you can show me a .info site that over ranks a .org in a competitive keyword, you win

  • Buy both, especially for a short domain name. You can either do the redirect or build them out with different content/purposes.

For SEO purpose, it won't matter which you use. It's really a matter of internal and external SEO how it will rank. Remember though that .info domains aren't as 'user friendly' as .com's and this might limit you in some ways, for example, if you were to try to sell it.

  • It seems like all the org - net - info - com distinctions are now considerably blurred. Personally, I've got the impressions that a site's being org or info has little effect if any on its rankings. A different thing is the general convention - org is for organizations, com is for businesses, etc.

  • I would go for the .org domain.
  • .org is much better..
  • .com is well known but not sure if it has better impact when it comes to optimization
  • I think the discussion here has sort of missed the point.

For SEO purposes, a .info vs a .com, or .org, has absolutely no proven difference whatsoever. What is of big, incredible importance however, is consumer perception, especially in IM.

.info domains have lost their trust with many technological savy people due to how many marketers spammed with them. On the contrary, people will always think of ".com" as being the main and most important domains, hence when they see a .com website vs a .net website, they'll think of the .com as being the "main one". I'm not saying this has any real logic, only that it's the way people perceive TLDs.

To answer your original question Devilfish, I'd say definitely get the .org without any question, but only because the consumer will pereceive the .org to have more weight than the .info (if the consumer even looked at the domain that is, but if they did, .org traditionally has more of an association with a non-profit organisation, and hence will, in their eyes, be more trustwrothy).

In terms of SEO, there is one once again, no difference.

    • In all honesty, a majority of the people online these days are not too internet savy, and those who do know their way around the internet, dont know much about the difference between .com (commercial), .net (technical), .org (organisations), .tv (tv related sites), .mobi (sites for PDA's, Mobiles), .info (general information), and doesn't really matter what domain name extension it is.

where the other 10-20% "may" rely on more of the traditional .com's for buying products, but since the .com boom and bust, it hardly matters.

  • many subjective ways to argue this one, but just out of experience and public perception I would personally choose the .org over the .info

sure most average people dont know the difference, but you will often get people that spot the .info from a mile off and make the assumption it's a traffic site
  • Long term or short term? Org looks better, I use info for quick projects that I sell on.

    • Depends on what your goal is.

If you are not sure, then only and only .com. Nothing else.

If you do SEO, immaterial. If you do PPC, maybe .org but a tough call.

If you want to sell off, again, .com and only .com ...
  • Definitely I would go for .Org not for .info. Because org carry more weight then the info domain.

  • well many idfferent answers... you can go for .org and use 301 redirect for .info
you wont see a high PR .info domain on Big G number 1 position!!
  • . org
  • .org has keyword in domain boost. but if you will have good and relevant content
    .info will pass too.
  • loz,

    You are the man! Kudos!
