How to confirm Google penalty ??

Yesterday One of my friends site's traffic goes down drastically, today i also check keywords he lost rankings to many of his keywords, can anybody suggest how to diagnose google penalty? how to confirm what happend this ?

Your help in this matter is really appreciable.

    What does his backlinks look like? When did the drop happen? It sounds like Google Penguin update got him or he has unnatural link warning. Did he receive this warning in Gogole Webmaster Tools section of website?

      Go into his webmaster tools account and click on "Search Traffic" and then on "Manual Actions". If Google applied a manual penalty to his website you should see the manual action that has been taken against his website...

      He can then fix the problems and resubmit his website for a Google manual review,

    On my feeder lead-gen sites that I blast with black hat stuff, of all of them only one has ever gotten the unnatural links warning, they just disappear. But they survive on Yahoo and Bing so even though their market share is much smaller than Google, SERPs for my niches are loaded with my lead gen sites lol

    1.Check the inbound links first.
    2.Check both the www and non www version of your domain.
    3.Compare the google page rank report with SEOmoz rank.
    4.Check internal links with webmaster tool.
    5.You can confirm your google penalty by checking with google penalty checker.
