I know rankings change all the time with different locations and browsers. Certain keywords for some of my sites change with bing, google and mobile...

I agree with you. Yes, it will happen when you are accessing from different locations. Also, it might be varies by accessing from different IP addresses.

Google serves mobile friendly sites higher when the user is searching on a mobile. That is most likely the reason for why you see a difference.

      That's just wrong.

Your smartphone has full browser capabilities, to begin with.

Google is not going to block zillions of websites that could care less about
      mobile.

Besides, as stated above, this is 2013...not 2001. "Mobile" has morphed into
      apps, not so much websites.

Why would you not expect to see different results on your phone? The sooner
people learn some basics, the better.

I could use my wife's laptop in the other room, same connection, and
      get different results.

Should not be strange to anyone with even a whiff of knowledge about how
google and the internet work. But, that lack of knowledge could lead to
      many other things...

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

Agreed that he's wrong, but disagree that mobile is app-focused. It may be headed that way, but responsive websites are doing very well without a corresponding mobile app.

I never said they blocked websites because they are not mobile friendly. I meant that they might treat them differently if the user is on a phone vs. desktop.

There are a few factors that are responsible for the variations in ranking:-

    • Local results more likely in mobile, so Google Places listings sometimes appear higher in results than they do in desktop
    • Positions of vertical results likely different in smartphone results
    • Blended mobile ranking algorithm for mobile queries
    • Android Market or iTunes results for queries that include “download” or “app”
    • Brand and store filters don’t currently occur in mobile smartphone search
    • CTR and bounce rate more likely to vary in mobile smartphone listings

Yes it changes as few websites are better optimized for mobile view and some are not even responsive so the search results literally changes and show different results.
