What to do after the Penguin 2.1 update?

Heya folks...

I've had a legit business manufacturing items and selling them online since the beginning of the year. I started by getting a tiny SEO service here and a tiny SEO service there. Never more than one at a time. I was having some great results and was ranking in the top 10 for a ton of my keywords.....

Until Penguin 2.1

So now I'm not in the top 100 for my 3 biggest keywords.

What do I do now? If everyone's fool proof link building and SERP ranking tools are now rendered useless, what are our options? I am new to SEO and just don't know what all the options are.

I appreciate any help or advice.

Dave

Stop focusing on Google updates & build quality/relevant links.
    • If your a manufacture then you have customers buying your product, get referral links on your customers sites/pages.
    • Get links on your material suppliers sites/pages.
    • Get local BBB links.
    • Get local newspapers to interview you about your manufacturing business (get a link for the online article).
    • Make donations on behalf of your business name (any amount) in exchange for a link. If your buyers are local, keep the donation money local.
    • Get links on only legit business directories (ex: thomasnet.com).
    • etc...

I can pretty much guarantee there's not a single SEO service on this forum or any other IM/SEO forum that owns the long term link sources you need.

There's nothing wrong with buying SEO but usually anyone claiming to be selling SEO & all they are is a link seller is bad news (avoid public link sellers). There's a difference between an SEO and a link seller, most times the link sellers don't actually know SEO, they only use the word SEO as a sales pitch. A real SEO will build links customized to your business, that's why real SEOs are expensive, they build long term SEO.

I'm talking about ranking pages for years, not just surviving a Google update.

Legit quality links + Relevancy + Moderation + Velocity Linking = You don't have to worry about Google updates.

You can still do more Grey Hat SEO with a slight risk, but what happens is.. Most people don't buildup any trust with G before building spammy links on bad sites, and their shooting themselves in the foot right from the start..

A relevant quality link will never get you penalized.

Get your links at niche relevant domains.

In case you use a network make sure they vary the OBL widely and make sure most of them are permanent on the homepage so that you don't have to keep on adding posts all the time.

Links = Low risk, high quality, relevant links. The risk factor of all links has gone up. Conversely this decreases the ROI of shady techniques and increases the ROI of sustainaible site building.

Inversely, this increases the value of good content and other metrics Google use.

Time to clean up those backlinks.

After you get your profile to look natural, meaning not having stupid high anchor text ratios and backlinking the same page, I would focus on quality links as outlined by Yukon and very private blog networks or homepage networks.

The problem is that those are tough to find. If they advertise it then you dont want to be apart of it. Its usually by word of mouth that you'll find these kind of networks.

So you should never do business with any SEO company then?

I would expect that all the SEO companies advertise in one way or another, even when they rank at page 1 it's a way of advertising to the public.

The only SEO companies that don't have their own network of private sites are the one I wouldn't do business with, unless you talk about the $10k+/month companies who really chose the path of link bait and build up connections. None of us would ever be able to hire them (well 99.99%+).

So when I go into GWT in the "links to your site', there is nothing in there at all.
      I have no manual actions.

When I look at Bing, they do show 244 backlinks. Some of which are valid and some from SEO services using crap.

Even if I clean up those links, there's no 'reconsideration request' to be made as Google isn't showing me anythings wrong (other than dumping my SERPs into hell)

Should I still use the info on Bing and try to get those off?

    You should follow these things:

Don't use low quality links, spammy links, paid links as a no follow on your website.
Avoid using more number of back links from particular website.
    Avoid using spun content.

You know what's funny, lately I heard a story from someone's site or article going viral, he got a ton of "natural" links that way and Google punished him for it, YAIKS.

At least make the story realistic.

It's as realistic as the one who posted the original story at this forum.

When you "have to do" something after each and any Google algo update, you obviously do something wrong.

As a rule, focus on content and deliver value to your users. Stop thinking about "search engines", the next G. update will come anyway. Focus on your site/content/users instead. My $0.02
