How is the .co extension?

Is it a TLD extension? Is it a good alternative to .com extension?

Nothing beats having a .com TLD

If you have a dot co and someone else has the dot com you may lose a lot your traffic.

Then again if you could find some good words to use in front of the .co then you might have a winner, like roc.co, roco.co, dis.co. flamen.co, lo.co, stuc.co etc

"investment opportunities" in less popular extensions have always fizzled out. The closest anything has ever come is .info.

In my experience .com is always the best. But it really depends on what you intend for the site it's attached to.

.co is ok but people will often mistake that as .com (or enter your URL with .com instead of .co.You may want to consider .net (I have had some great success with one .net site in particular).

If you are trying to create a long term authority site, you really need the .com. The only caveat to that is if you are creating a site focussed on one country, then for example a .co.uk will surfice.

If you are creating small niche sites, or doing some churn and burn SEO, pretty much any international extension will do. .com, .net, .org, .co. I would generally avoid .biz and .info, i have pretty anecdotal evidence that says those domains don't rank as easy.

A few years ago i made a mistake registering a .vg domain name (I got a premium name poker.vg). But this didnt rank very easily in the serps for US queries, so please don't make the same mistake i did. :-)

The .co is a respected TLD though as mentioned it looks so much like the .com, that someone might mistakenly type your competitor's web address and go to the wrong site. Though on Google search, you are likely to get many click throughs, assuming Google is still taking keyword branded domains seriously.

There is still good sense in cashing in on a .co or any other TLD if it lets you get a keyword you could not otherwise. Even if Google is devaluing keyword rich domains, they serve the end user's purpose by letting them know the site is about that specific topic which they have searched.

      Exactly my POV.

For the majority, the only reason people will consider getting a .co is because the superior .com is already taken, which will lead to the exact scenario you mention.

Irrespective of whether Google has a soft spot for .co or not, I steer clear.

IMO, search engines won’t mind whether you have a .com vs .co extension when it comes to SEO. There is no huge difference with the different TLDs. It’s no question however that .com ,along with .org and .net, are very popular and have claim trust and respect from most users. Whatever the domain extension of a website is, as long as your site is properly optimized – onpage and offpage, your site can have good results in the SERPs.

.com is the oldest and most popular when it comes to branding a high authority.
I'll go for .com domain, you can optimize .com domain much easier than any other.

Hundreds of new TLDs are coming, that means the domain industry is about to change. There are three kind of TLDs worth investing at:
    1) .com (global leaders)
    2) geographical domains (local leaders)
    3) .org (online communities)

  • I always try to stick to .com when I can. However I would much rather have a 5 letter.net than a .com with 8 words in it. When in doubt get the .com

Why a .com is priced 10-15 times more than a .net domain
I think that the correlation between the price of .coms and .net may be compared to the correlation between the price of gold and the price of silver.
      Let’s see some facts here..
CORRELATION BETWEEN DOMAINS AND PRECIOUS METALS
      1) Gold and silver are both precious metals as .com and .net are both precious TLDs
      2) Gold and silver are the most popular precious metals as .com and .net are the most popular TLDs
      3) Gold and silver are both used for retail and investment purposes like .com and .net are both used for building sites and investment purposes
      Comparing the 2 Ratios
      4) The price of gold is something like 50 times the price of silver while the price of a .com is usually 10-15 times the price of the same .net.
      CONCLUSION
      My 'wired' conclusions..
      i) The price of gold is probably going to crush against silver
ii) .coms have a long way to go until they should be considered overpriced..
I believe that both i) and ii) conclusions will happen in the next 2-3 years..

The other correlation precious metals and domains share is that they are both sold through manufactured artificial scarcity to inflate their value.

Well, .CO domains are ok if you want to build your own site & develop. If you want to sell the domain, .CO can't be compared with .COM. Of course generic, short & high type in traffic keyword .COM domains are very expensive. Well, that's how the market goes.
